A-111-2

Hi to you all,

I wasn't a member of this group when this module was being planned. Dieter, would you consider revisiting if there was now more interest? A lot of us are into the buchla sound and would love a complex oscillator like this!

Hello,

I admit, that I do not understand the need for the A-111-2 as it was
planned. Such modules invalidate the basic idea of an modular system.
All functions of the A-111-2 can be achieved by the combination of
existing modules.

I think a follower for the A-111 would be great. But it would be enough
to be a high quality triangle core VCO, with excellent tracking on a
wide range.

I'm sorry but this project has been cancelled. The inquiries and interests were close to zero :-(

On the occasion of the Musikmesse I had some discussions concerning complex or dual oscillators (most of the "complex" oscillators
are dual VCOs). Some visitors were asking especially if we think about a dual version of the new quadrature thru-zero VCO A-110-4.
From my point of view such a dual VCO would not be much cheaper than two of the A-110-4 and e.g. a dual VCA A-132-3. This would be
about Euro 350 altogether and we could offer a dual VCO with the same features not much cheaper (maybe Euro 320). And with separate
modules one is much more flexible as one could combine different VCOs (e.g. a triangle/saw/rectangle non-thru-zero VCO with a
sine/cosine thru-zero VCO), VCAs and other interacting modules. Just my 2 cents.

Best wishes

Would there be a possibility for a VCO with built in wave shaping?

I also don't see no need for "complex" dual oscillators or built in
waveshapers. The flexibility of separate modules is one of the
strongest points of having and working with a modular synth. Many new
and exciting combinations of modules are possible this way much more
than with hardwired complex oscillators and other multi purpose and
feature rich modules that seem to be very trendy these days.

Actually they're very old; Buchla had them in the 1960s :)

Of course this would be possible. But here comes the next question: which type of VCO (triangle, sawtooth, trapezoid or sine/cosine
core) and which kind of wave shaper. There is not only ONE type of VCO and one type of wave shaping. Wave shaping ranges e.g. from
simple clipping over the features of modules like A-116 or A-136 to wave multiplying like A-137-1/2. And even wavetables are kind of
waveshaping. That's why I'd prefer separate modules. Of course I know that there is also a market for VCO/Wave shaping/VCA combo
modules. But I'm not sure if we will go this way too.

Hey no worries, I'm glad you're making stuff at all Dieter! I think a lot of my more esoteric VCO wants are going to be sorted with the TZ range anyway. I must admit the most exciting sounds to be the Triangle core based one so far...

fried my A-138 (linear)

2015-05-05 by Kazys Varnelis

I guess it was my time to fry a module. I lost an A-138V2 (linear) mixer by misconnecting it. If it’s likely to be the opamp, I’d be glad to give it a try, maybe replacing it with the OP470AY for kicks.

I'll say one of the reasons I choose Doepfer modules is they haven't dived into the hp race to the bottom with smaller and more densely packed combination modules. When they do it, it's typically novel and still with a mind to usability.

Take care,

I'm quite sure replacing the quad OpAmp (LM324/TL084/TL074 compatible) will solve the problem.

ha, I wouldn't lump complex oscillators in with the current fad for multi purpose modules that are feature fat to the point of confusion or overkill.

a well designed complex oscillator has a particular personality that differentiates it from other complex oscillators and even user created complex oscillator work flows. also, a great complex oscillator has so much depth and possibility that its incredibly flexible.

myself, i would very much be interested in how Mr. Doepfer would approach the design of a complex oscillator...especially one that would be differentiated, say, from the DPO, Furrthrrr Generator and the Intellijel Rubicon / Dixie / uFold combo...even just theoretically?
