Software for Sound Sampler System

2015-05-29 by florian anwander

Hello,

this is a long shot, but worth trying:

I bought a 8-voice Doepfer Sound Sampler System (not the A-112, but the
one from 1984). Since I owned already a one voice system, I thought that
I would have the C64 diskettes too. But unfortunately it seems, that I
have given them away. I asked Dieter and Chris already and they promised
to have a look in their "archive", but maybe someone here has those
diskettes too, and maybe even still a working C64 with Diskdrive...

If yes I would really appreciate if you could make me a copy.

Florian

If anyone does have this, they should probably ask Dieter if he'd like to host a copy of the .d64 online somewhere. It's always nice when things can be preserved for future generations, and it's something that should be easier with software, given how easily copied it is.

Of course we would do this. But I have no idea how to copy the data of a C64 disk so that it can be published on our website (and
the other way round too for the user: i.e. how to copy the data on a C64 disk). I'm sure there are such tools but I'm not familiar
with them.

Best wishes

Hello

First of all: I will get a diskette. A kind guy from the german
sequencer.de forum will send me a copy.

The exchange between a PC and a C64 is not really possible on the
diskette level (the PC 5.1/4 Disks have a completely different format
from the C64).

The only remaining possibility is the socalled "Zoom-Floppy" from a
company Retroinnovations, which is a kind of USB-1541 adapter:
http://store.go4retro.com/zoomfloppy/

So even if Doepfer hosts these files in the web, still the users have no
chance to use them without this kind of adapter.

And a short addon: you are not done with the adapter. You still have a
ton of software to install and to handle on your windows computer or
Linux machine (keywords: OpenCBM, Vice).

I know people who are happy to image old disks into files if anyone has a copy of the actual disk. (If you're into soldering and have a 1541 disk drive, it's pretty straightforward to make an X1541 cable, but if not, other people have it covered.) The main thing is making sure there are multiple copies online of the resulting .d64 file so the data isn't lost forever. Getting it back onto a C64 isn't too tricky, as anyone with a C64 these days is more likely than not already familiar with the format and knows how to either copy it back onto a real floppy disk, or better yet emulate it on a cute little SD drive plugged directly into the C64.

Hello,

I just wanted to give you an update. I finally could grab a working
C128D and got the software (and found out how the C64 disk works on a
C128D...) . The next step will be to install a SD2IEC drive in the
C128D, and after that I hope to be able to provide the *.d64 file.

I haven't yet connected the SSS to the Commodore, because I first have
to overhaul it, but working with this old program was really a flash
back. All navigation is done by key shortcuts and calling a subroutine
makes the floppy working for minutes... :-)

Re: [Doepfer_a100] Software for Sound Sampler System

heh, reminds me of a couple years back i figured out how to directly tap the audio from the board of an old apple //e to sample some of the gloriously crunchy sounds it made, and trying to remember the necessary keyboard commands and key controls for old programs & games from 30 years earlier was quite the flashback. and oh yes, the 5 1/4" floppies taking their time to grind away... until the drive heads end up scrambling the data and corrupting the disk permanently (30+ years old cheap magnetic data media, it's a known issue among apple ][ people: you usually only get a few good reads before the disk self-destructs, and you get that wonderful horrific SKRRRIIIKIKIKIKIKIKK!!!!!! sound from the drive mechanism when a disk fails to read... hmm, gonna have to record that too at some point...).
and my apologies to the group, i know this has nothing to do with Doepfer, but Florian's tale just reminded me of my own recent "ancient computer flashback" experience. :-)

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
