modular synth help for newbie

2001-12-15 by michaelbleming

Hello, sorry if you've read this in other groups. I've been
interested in buying a modular synth for years now
and I'm finally starting to look into purchasing one. I've looked at
numerous dealers and found doepfer along the way. I know
very little about modular synths (can't wait to learn!) so please
bear with me. I've always loved the sounds produced my the old EMS
Synthi and VCS synths so I'm kind of looking to put together a
similar "sounding" synth. Another attraction of the EMS synths
(synthi a) is their size...I'd like to be able keep the size down as
small as possible, in a case I could carry around relatively easily.
I have no real interest in the typical "techno" or beat oriented
sounds, I'm looking for noises (not really the typical analog
blurbling, more harsh type sounds like the EMS), sound effects,
drones, etc... Is it possible to put together a collection of doepfer
modules into a system that will serve my interests? I'm assuming that
it is possible, I'm just not sure how to go about it. I've been
looking at the basic system (w/out midi) yet I'm not sure if this
will be the solution for me. I have no interest in a keyboard
controller or midi, I really want something like the synthi a or VCS
3 (I've looked at the joystick module and was hoping that it might be
a comparable solution to the VCS3 joystick). Is there a way to build
the system that I'm looking for? Are there any other companies that
might be more suitable in helping me find what I'm looking for(Analog
Systems were very helpful with ideas utilizing their modules...I'm
just looking at my options right now). And finally, I'd like to keep
proce below $2000-2500 Thanks
for any guidance you can give me.

Hi Michael,
I'm in exactly the same boat! try taking a look at Analogue Solutions as well as Doepfer and Analogue Systems they have some set ups that may be interesting to you and all these makers modules are interchangable within the same rack if you prefere one thing over another.

hi,
well some ideas...first of all,i love the sounds of
the vcs3/synthi a,too.but if you want a synth that
sounds like these two,why don't you order the synthi A
from EMS??
but if you want something with much more creative
options go for the doepfer.why??1.because it has the
biggest variety of modules available(67!!).2.they are
cheap!!3.sound good!!4.they take a little space(less
than any other modular i can think of...)so,you want
something like a vcs3??
here is an idea:(2)a110 or 111 VCO's,(1)a131
exp.vca,(1)a132 dual lin.vca,(1 or 2)a140 adsr,(1)vc
slew limiter,(1) joystick,(1 or 2)a147vc-lfo's,(1)a138
lin.mixer,(1)a138b exp.mixer,(1)ems diode filter(when
it is released...)0r a a121 multimode filter for lots
of possibilities,(1)a199 spring reverb,(1)ring
mod.,(1)a118 noise module,(1)a116 waveform
processor,(1)a136 waveshaper(for strange-noisy
sounds),(1 or 2)a180 multiples,(1)a134 vc-panning.i
hope that these can fit in a doepfer 6U rack portable
case.and you're ready to go!!(look for the filter
module that you like best!!doepfer has a lot of
different filter modules...i don't know what you may
like...i chose the a121 multimode-12db for you,because
it will give you more filter types.)
and after all go for a a100 because, dieter doepfer is
a nice,helpful guy,who will answer your
questions, sometimes even in the same day!!
o.k,i am the doepfer_a100 group moderator,so,i can't
be totally objective...but the bottom line is that i
really like my a100,so much that i give all my money
for expanding it!!

hello, i'm new to this list too..and just for reference, i have a
modest system of mixed doepfer/analog
systems/blacet/metasonix pieces.

in your post you mention: "> I have no real interest in the typical
"techno" or beat oriented
> sounds, I'm looking for noises (not really the typical analog
> blurbling, more harsh type sounds like the EMS), sound

well, from my experience w all this stuff, for what you're looking
for, it's worth taking a look at blacet modules, check out the
darkstar module as a good starting point. that said, i don't think
you'll find a easy substitute for the vcs3 'sound'. then again,
now that i think of it, i recently played w an arp 2600 that was
certainly happiest making the types of sound you describe. it
really has a mind of it's own sometimes, much like the vcs3, and
is somewhat similar in nature.

good luck.
