Slew

Slew

2016-02-19 by Zoë Blade

Hi everyone!

So I got an A-171-2 primarily for sliding notes, and secondarily for all the other neat stuff you can do with it...

After a cursory attempt at using it, the pitch CV that comes out is nowhere near the one that goes in, quite aside from my inability to get it to slew properly...

Am I doing something wrong, or is this module really just intended for the more esoteric uses (LFO, envelope generator) only?

Am I going to have more luck with an A-170 or A-171? I just want to slew notes like the MCV-24 does, only with the ability to manually ride the slew time knob as I'm playing, with the pitch CV value staying intact, slewing aside of course.

I'm running the pitch CV through an A-185-1 first, so buffering hopefully shouldn't be an issue.

(Of course, the correct fix for my problem would be to rewrite the MCV-24's firmware so it can slew only overlapping notes, but I doubt I'd be permitted to see that!)

Thanks!
Zoë.

If I understand the comment on the http://www.doepfer.de/a171.htm (yes,
this one! Not the 1712.htm) right, then the buffer must be AFTER the
slewlimiter (=at the output), not before/at the input.

Also it looks to me, that the A-172-2 is not really intended for the
usage with a VCO.

Thank you, Florian!

You're right, thanks! I'll try them in that order.

Do you (or does anyone else for that matter) know if the A-170 or A-171 is more designed for slewing pitch CVs in particular than the A-172-2? That paragraph you quoted suggests that either of those two should be fine for what I'm trying to do, but if anyone could verify this before I buy another slew module, I'd appreciate it!

Thanks!
Zoë.

For portamento applications (pitch CV slew limiting) I'd recommend the upper section of the A-170. It has been optimized for this
job. It has e.g. no serial output resistor to avoid any voltage losses. The A-171-2 has a lot of cool features but precise slew
limiting for pitch CV is not among these.

Best wishes

Thanks, both of you! It looks like an A-170 is my next purchase, then. :)
