Your thoughts considering bassdrum setup

Your thoughts considering bassdrum setup

2016-10-02 by jaccoville@yahoo.com

Hello groupmembers,

I would like to "build" a dedicated case for bassdrum, kick ..... Etc
My wishlist at the moment is a Jomox modbase09 with a Doepfer Lowpass filter which I want to place in a Doepfer MC100 "small case".
Which Doepfer filter would be the best choice in this setup?
note: filter will used for bassdrum only.

Your thoughts please ....

Cheers

Jacco Ville

Hello Jacco

Just one hint: the best bassdrum-exciter is a resonating
high(!)pass-filter.
If you have an existing (thin) bassdrum sound, then send it through a
highpass filter. Set the resonance to nearly selfoscillation, and then
tune the cutoff frequency down. Example: if your original bassdrum is
around 50 Hz, then the highpass will resonate again with a cutoff at
25Hz. The resonance control will act as an intensity parameter for the
"excitement".

Hi Florian,

That's a complete different approach than I had in mind although it's a brainshaker ;-)
What I had in mind was a filter not only to shape the sound but also to muffle it without to alter the mix level.
The "thin" sound you refer to is not a common thing with a Jomox module I think. Very loud and fat.
Thanks anyway for pointing me in a different direction.

Hello Jacco,

of course a Jomox bassdrum does not need this (I own a Xbase09 ;-) ...). My thought was more generally about how to handle bassdrum sounds.
