A-111-5 Volume

A-111-5 Volume

2016-12-16 by Kazys Varnelis

Hello again,

I have found a second A-111-5 for my Doepfer box (I have enough modules than one P-6 case is largely Makenoise, another P-6 is largely Doepfer and there are some LC cases as well). Joy! Wish I could find these new, but since I can’t, I have to pick them up second-hand.

I connected them both up and they sound splendid. No real tuning issues I need to care about. The only thing that mystifies me is that one unit is a bit louder than the second no matter how I plug things. One seems to be a bit below “typical” Eurorack levels. Not terribly so, but still significant enough that it would require me to constantly work around it by changing the output level. Could it be that one VCA knob is out of alignment? I am still quite new to the A-111-5. Perhaps there is something I am missing? I have an O’Tool Plus that I can use as a voltmeter or levels meter. If I am to adjust trimming pot R23 (have not tried), is there a set volume or voltage that I should tune both to?

I appreciate this forum so much!

Thanks!

Kazys

The output level of the A-111-5 was defined by a resistor (R66, standard
value 47k). If the resistor is replaced you may change the output level
(e.g. 100k for twice the level).

In this regard another question to all members: We receive a lot of
inquiries for the A-111-5 in the vintage version. If anybody knows a
reliable source for CEM3394 (not only one piece but at least a few) please
let me know. If we can find a noteworthy quantity we may manufacture a
limited vintage version of the A-111-5.

Thank you

if you can't find 3340s would it be possible to do a limited run of a version of the 111-5 but based on the re-versioned voice architecture from the Dark Energy 2? just a random thought...

I would be interested in 2 more greyscale (not vintage look) A-111-5 modules and i would be happy to supply 6 used 3394 Cems from my Akai AX-73 :)

If the AX-73 is still working I think it's not a good idea to remove the
chips for building A-111-5. I'm against the cannibalization of working
devices for chip harvesting. If the AX-73 is defective I'll be happy to buy
the CEM3394 from you and to collect them until a noteworthy quantity is
reached (min. 200, otherwise the price would be much higher than before, but
we could also manufacture e.g. 50 units at a higher price).

Actually a vintage eurorack version of the dark energy 2 would not be a bad idea for a new module release. They are only available as desktop modules right now but one probably would like to euro rack these up as well.

Personally i dont mind to do the unthinkable and scavenge my 2nd spare AX-73, these akai synths sound awesome but the control design around the cem chips is inflexible in many ways, for instance the only available lfo is also not midi/external trigger-able. I do agree its not the best way but i cant think of what other options there are for obtaining these really obsolete CEM3394's nowadays. They seem to be all bought up, found out that some old arcade games consoles used them too but if you could find these cems, they were soldered directly to the circuit boards and (working) boards are probably collectors items anyway. http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=607
Unless curtis is going to do a new batch of them or unless somebody is going to open up a box of nos cems its going to be rather unlikely to appear for a useable quantity of CEM3394's.

Looks interesting. The main problem is to de-solder the chips from a
doubled-sided plated-through board without damage. And then to find out if
they are OK. I'll see if I can find a service provider who can do this job.
But that's a project for the next year ...

So, were these Bally Sente boards chips used for the small production
run of the

And could I and other interested still be lucky enough to obtain one
such module :)

I now read on various supplier websites that this module was available

We collected about 100 CEM3394 from different sources for the limited
edition of the A-111-5V. A few of them (about 25-30) were desoldered from
the Bally Sente boards.

Nice to hear you were able to still source that much cem3394 altogether
and took the care to desolder some of those, but probably this then was
for the very last batch. The outcome catched me a little by surprise but
Patryk from modemmodular helped me to obtain 2 of these modules (thanks
Patryk). One of these has cem3394 rev 8609, the other i still have to
check. Because the older modules here have the aluminium faceplate i was
wondering if there are extra knobs / faceplates available (either black
or aluminium) so i would be able to replace one or the other to get an
unified look for all a-111-5 modules?

Thanks in advance and all have a good (modular) weekend.

I'm sorry - we have no surplus front panels A-111-5V available. Due to
problems in the anodizing company we have avtually only 97 of the black
panels available (i.e. 3 less than required) and will have to manufacture 3
of the 100 modules with the silver standard panels.

Best wishes
