A-100P9 Case PSU3

A-100P9 Case PSU3

2017-02-22 by Diego Ragnini

Hello,

last year I purchased an A-100P9 case, being sure that the modules would be totally safe during transport. Recently someone discouraged me to let the case to travel down into the baggage hold of the airplanes. He was not providing clear motivations, hinting at possible electric shocks due to unspecified magnetic fields into the airplane cargo. The result is that he caused anxiety into my heart concerning the modules safety during airplane trips.

So I thought this mailing list might be the right place where to find the proper answer: is there a real risk to cause damages if the A-100P9 case is sent into the airplane baggage hold?

Best, Diego

I have never heard of such a problem (I can speak only for A-100 modules,
not for modules from other manufacturers). All modules to our dealers in
USA, Canada, Japan and so on are shipped via air cargo. But I'd strictly
recommend to use the carton and the foam corners that come with the A-100
case for airplane cargo transportation.

Best wishes

If there is any risk, then it is the risk of mechanical damage. A case
like the A-100P9 may be called "flight"-case, but in fact it will not
stand, what a real flight case like a Pelicase, would stand.

And the danger is, that the movers in the airport thinks "aaah looks
like stable", so they handle it without any care. A friend of mine is
flying twice a month to gigs. After some experiences with half crashed
cases he now packs his A-100 case (and other cases) in a normal
softbags. This way the gear looks like a normal bags and the movers will
handle it with more care.

Sorry for the awful grammar, I first wrote the phrases in singular and

I would NEVER trust a P6 case to baggage handlers. They will see the road case and treat it like a road case. I have had traveling musician friends who have seen their multi-guitar road cases dropped off the planes loading ramp. They have had them come looking great on the outside but with stuff smashed in the inside from drops and inertia. The great thing about the P6 is that it is under the carry-on size limits of almost all airlines there are. Carry it on if you want it to survive. Otherwise buy a large Pelican case and pack it surrounded by foam. Don’t gamble with your gear. Checking it in as baggage is taking a big gamble for sure.

Dear Florian,

thanks for the useful hint, your english is good to me and is very good compared to mine!

I also thank James who replied while I am writing…

I would conclude that the case is a kind of tricky bag, giving the impression of sturdiness (but not) and so inviting to treat it bad…!

I would carry it on by hand but I will not be able because I will have other hand baggage for music as well.

Big problem.

The pelican case? Yes, though it sounds a bit redundant :-) a flight case into a pelican… at least there's a lot for flying imagination, hoping to find the proper sizes pelican…

Best of the best,

Diego

I understan the oddness of putting a P6 in a Pelican case. A bit of an overkill. The advantage is that you can get a Pelican big enough for the P6 and some extra small gear. I typically carry the mixer and effects and all my cables and power supplies and a skiff or two in the Pelican and carry on the P6. The Pelican with the extending handles and wheels makes a perfect carrier for the P6 when you get to where you have to go too.

Dear James, the Peli case would be the best option, I just seized the opportunity to make some humor since the words flight & pelican offered a funny chance! Again thanks, I wasn't thinking of it… Best, dxx

I would think once again about the dead simple (and not very costy)
trick, to put the P9 into a cheap travel bag or suitcase. This way it
looks like a normal luggage and won't be dropped around that ugly as the
movers would do with a road case. A cheap suitcase costs around 40 Euro,
a Pelicase costs 400 Euro.

Florian, unbelievable, I was just thinking the same… If you already know any bag that might fit the sizes, please tell me, the Peli case could be used to transport other gear indeed, though i can't afford it for now.

I don't know a dedicated suitcase, but I search shortly toreassure the
prices before I write them. As the P9 case is 48cm x 46cm you need a
quite large suitcase (75cm long), because most of the modest ones are
only 40cm - 45cm wide. A P6 would be only 34cm x 46cm, so you can use
much smaller suitcases.

Another idea: There are covers for loudspeakers, one might use. Just as
an example:

The case I use is a Pelican 1610 and has an internal dimension of 21.78”x16.69”x10.62” (the lid is 2” deep) and on Amazon they go for ~$200 (189 euros) and sell with no foam (the 1610NF) for $180 (170 Euros) and used even cheaper. Not as cheap as standard luggage, but very convenient to move around since it has an extendable handle and wheels which a suitcase doesn’t. My back paid for that convenience in a second. Also, though not usually needed, they are totally waterproof. They also have built in places for TSA or other locks.

Just a remark

> Pelican 1610

The 1610 is too small for a A-100P9, you need a 1630, which costs in
average 425 Euros incl foam.
