A-180.1 - replacing the solder bridge

A-180.1 - replacing the solder bridge

2017-05-26 by nicholas.buckley@ntlworld.com

Hi everyone,

No luck over at Wigglers so I thought I should try here.

I've acquired a standard 2 x 1:4 A-180-1 which I would like to convert to a 1 x 1:8 by reinstating the solder bridge.

I just want to make sure that I know exactly what I'm soldering and, more importantly, what I'm not...

My gut feeling is that I should solder a fine wire loop between the pair of tiny holes ( the red ring in my picture ) and, at the same time, ensure that no new solder comes into contact with either of the solder points circled in blue.

The image is here. Sorry, I'm not sure how/if i can upload directly into a Yahoo group message:

If you've done this yourself, please could you confirm my thinking or correct me, as necessary.

Best wishes to all.

Hi Nick,

This must be an old pcb rev.
I looked it up but both my A180-1s and A180-2s (and I got a lot of them) have another pcb layout.
Very clear two solder bulbs very close to each other, can't miss.
Can't help you herewith, buy a new one for 30£ ?

Good luck and cheers

Hi Jacco,

Thanks for that.

You highlighted a key issue with my original post - this is an original A-180, not a re-badged A-180.1 so that probably explains the earlier PCB layout.

It was clearly sold originally as a 2 x 1:4 because there is no black line on the panel between jacks 4 & 5.

I deliberately got a cheap, second-hand one in case I made a mistake when re-instating the solder bridge.

It will also be easy for me to remember that the ( one and only ) A-180 will be my 1 x 1:8 and my other A-180-1's will be the 2 x 1:4's.

Looking at actual track on the PCB ( in two halves at the moment ) one ends at a solder point and the other ends at one of the pair of tiny holes so I think that these two need to be joined with a new bridge.

From the bodies of each jack, it's difficult to tell which two are the Tip and Sleeve and which two are just legs.

Cheers,

Nick

Hi Nick,

Within the modular world it's not an luxury to have a multimeter.
In that case solving the routing of the pcb is a breeze.

I soldered one of my A180-2s and used a black marker between the 4 and 5th jack.

Maybe Dieter has the right answer to your pcb thing.

Cheers

Jacco

Ha ha Jacco, multimeter - why didn't i think of that

Another recommendation is a good magnifying glass - on the 'inner' face of the PCB I can just make out "JPR" by the two holes. I wonder if any jumper was ever supplied with this early version of the A-180 ?

No real surprise I guess that it is the two holes that need to be bridged.

A ten minute job in my workshop and now I have a fully functioning 1 x1:8 multiple. A very efficient way to distribute clock pulses from my A-154.

Cheers,

Nick
