Hello,

Of the more "exotic" modules in the
Doepfer roster, I'm curious what 
people here feel are the most
desirable?  I have quite few modules
now, but, I trying to decide which
direction to build in.

I'm new to writing message in the list
even though I've been member for quite a while.
I am not sure I understand the A156.
Does it actually simulates some kind of chord effects
like a guitar. It is really not clear, someone can tell me maybe?
also I am waiting for A198 and A109 very impatiently?
and also, yeah what is this chaos module?

hello ethan,

my favorite modules by now are:
a129 vocoder, a108 + a124 + a127 filters, a112 sampler.

i mostly use the a112 as vc samplerate converter :-)

the a156 quantizes a cv to fit different scales,
like semitones, chromatic and so on.
i use it mainly with a155, a178 or korg sq10
to get correct semitones for the oscillators.

it doesn't generate chords, but it can quantize a cv to
fit the pitches of a chord.

I think the module, that is most desirable to all of us, is the powersupply
;-)

Beside that, it depends on what you are doing. I personally cannot have
enough Oscillators, since I do a lot of sounds with many crossmodulations.

I often use the "external input" for getting envelope follower voltages,
that I use for compressor like stuff (not for external signals but for
A-100 sounds).

I also would appreciate a Sampler-Module, the Subharmonic-Osc and the
Theremin controller.

Well Ethan, you should consider what you want to do musically 
with your machine before start assemling modules...my system 
consists of both wide range of soundgeneration/processing 
modules and cv/gate/trigger generators/modifiers. 
I think that a "ittle of all" system could easly render "must have 
more of all" symptom, It has for my part, starting of with a small 
monosynth setup, then expanding it over a 7 years period. Finally 
i,ve got the polyphonic-tactical-all-purpose system i wanted from 
the beginning, but couldnt afford from start back in 95.
So if you got money to spend, by as much as you can, to fullfill 
your needs at once, otherwise you´ll end up saying "oh i could 
really have use for this and that" and this i think slows down the 
creative process.

my suggestion is to by or build many mixers/attenuators (both 
lin.&exp&vc lin.), multiples, oscillators and vca´s...
Its also important to have a lot of cv/trig/gate 
generators/modifiers
I.e. the trigger modif. is a really great litte module, that i use in all 
my patches.

Sometimes I use a chord-generator patch which creates triads - two 
VCOs are tuned to fifths, and a third VCO is controlled from the A156 
to insert the appropriate third: major, or minor, based on the root 
note CV.

The A156 is particularly nice with random LFOs (needs an offset 
voltage)

The trigger output of the A156 is an endless source of rythmic 
variations, I experiment with it constantly - sometimes 
successfully, sometimes not.

If you have an A156, you'll be pleased to also have the CV Source 
module, both for offsetting bipolar CVs to feed into the A156, and 
also to create transpose voltages.

Does the A156 count as an "exotic"? I use it constantly, sometimes 
even with the A155! :-)

Hey Joe (Hendrix reference intended)

How do you use the A176 to offset bipolar
sources?  I was under the impression that
only the A129/3 could offset CVs.

i think he uses an additional mixer module to create an offset
with the a176.

Tim Rose, dude, Tim Rose, not Jimi. I saw him open for the Doors in 
1969, the first "power trio" I ever saw. Awesome. Some unknown guy 
named John Bonham was playing drums I think. Then I saw Hendrix, Mitch 
Mitchell and Noel Redding at the same venue two months later. Opened 
with "I don't live today", amazing to hear that song live.

I don't have the A129/3, so I use the CV source module and an A138a 
mixer for attenuation/offset. Someday I'll spring for the A129/3 I 
guess.

Hi!

It´s not very exotic, but one of my most used modules is the Wasp 
filter. Great for hard chainsaw-like sounds and rhythms. At the 
beginning I thought, it sounds terrible, but then... One of my 
favourites is also the 127 Reso VCF. I use it to create "living" 
rhythms and so on.. The next one is the "normal" 115 Divider. When
you 
put an LFO into it, divide it and trigger s.th. you can create live 
rhythms by a very easy way. Simple and good.
