P-9 making high pitched sound

P-9 making high pitched sound

2018-12-11 by kazys varnelis

Hi I have a P-9 that makes a high pitched sound at the edge of my hearing (12-13000Hz or so). I have three others, none of them make it. It decreases as I unplug modules, but with half of them unplugged, it is still faint. It doesn't appear to be any module in particular. The bus board reads version 5/2008.

Any thoughts?

What is the module concerned by this sound output? The one you hear the sound from, I mean… Or just any module featuring an audio output jack?

I think he talks about a "mechanical" sound, not from the electric signal.

ah so, he wrote about hz measuring and this was misleading to me

Re: P-9 making high pitched sound

My first thought was a whining DC-DC converter, but I think they are linear power supplies, so probably not. Also, I thought you meant signal noise.

I guess it could be a buzzing transformer, but I wasn't aware that could give a high pitched sound.

I don't know if this helps, but there appear to have been three different versions of the power supply:

If it's a mechanical noise, you might still get it with all modules unplugged, or failing that with just a dummy load, e.g. a small torch that can take 12V, connected to a bus board. If so, it would have to be the power supply.

Do you speak about a mechanical sound (coming from the case, not connected
to mixer/amplifier/loudspeaker) or an electrical noise coming from the
modules ?

Which power supply is built in (A-100PSU2 or A-100PSU3) ?

Best wishes

Probably the transformer. PSU1s were prone to becoming noisy in this way in my experience
