I have to agree with Dieter about people building kits, as many
aspiring DIY'ers don't have the skill or patience to finish a single
module, let alone enough modules to create a small synth. Having
said that, it looks like a few of us here do not fall into that camp.

I understand (and agree) that Dieter must protect the Doepfer name
and reputation, and try to keep disassociated from crappy DIY jobs.
With that in mind, what about selling pre-drilled and printed front
panels, (and since I'm assuming that the printing for these panels
will also stipulated when ordered) but instead of the Doepfer logo
either have no name, or an alternate name to denote that it is a DIY
project of some description.

Another idea would be to sell front panels with only pre-drilled
holes and scales printed on the front panel (i.e. no module
name/number, and no company name). That way, one could purchase
a "generic" front panel that's still useable.

Kevin

Don't get me wrong. I'd really like to see some Doepfer kits, but
Dieter has to protect his company's reputation. Anyone have an idea?

Re: AW: [Doepfer_a100] DOEPFER'S ANSWER to the possibility of offering kits.

2003-04-01 by Andreas Lindholm

It seemed that I overrated the actually manufacturing by Doepfer in this
globalized world. So I seems a bit trickier to manufacture kits. And I fully
understand the problem with secondhand kits that people sell as genuin
Doepfer gear. Technically speaking that isn't not the responsiblity of
Doepfer and no matter how rude they act such claims should be ignored. But
that aside I understand that Doepfer doesn't want that to happend anyway
cause it is always not worth it to keep fending off morons. So I fully
understand that Doepfer don't want to make kits. I wonder how the other
brands that sell kits deals with theese problems:/

Kevins ideas for nologo panels could perhaps help a bit as could could pcbs
without logos, but I suspect some scoundrels might try to sell them as the
real thing too. And also customizing the parts for DIYkits would make them
more expensive due to smaller series. So it seems to me that there is sort
of a dead end here. A shame, but one I can live with since I am probably a
guy that would make a module od the "electronic garden style" ;)

So even though I'd like to try a kit just for the education about it I'd
rather buy an attenuator module!

Re: DOEPFER'S ANSWER to the possibility of offering kits.

2003-04-02 by pstnotpd

Well, if we are going thatta way.
I could imagine two types of these,

186a : 5 knobs,5 switches and 10 jack sockets and maybe a big 25 D
connector so you can connect up to whatever experimentation board
you'd want to use. Of course connected to the power supply with some
sort of shortout protection.

When the 'experiment' turns out valid I'd imagine

186b : Same knobs, switches and sockets but now internally a
standardized card slot in which a custom print could be inserted. The
card slot connections could be standardized like the D connector.

It could be called something like A186a/b DIY module ;-)

I'd imagine the circuit protection would be a hassle, and I suppose
there'd be some warranty issues here. But it sure would open up
experimenting when your not a soldering god (like me)

Sure am curious how this thread will turn out!

It would be a great idea for Doepfer to offer blank panels without
the Doepfer logo. I would definitely buy several of them if
offered. The idea of a 5 jack, 5 pot 8hp panel sounds perfect too.
Please do it.
It's funny. I was wishing for this exact thing just this week. Even
for people who don't want to build their own circuits, this would
allows us to adopt modules from other manufacturers that are not
offered by Doepfer to our systems. (I personally want to add Buchla
style low pass gates to my system.)
In order to maximize the chance of this actually happening, lets not
make it too complpicated. 8hp 5 knob, 5 jack panels sound perfect.
Please do this Mr. Doepfer.
While we're on the subject of Buchla style low pass gates, Would
Doepfer consider actually manufacturing one? The circuit must be in
the public domain, and seems to be well known. It has to be done
with vactrols, just like the original. The slow response is an
important part of the sound. Is anybody else interested in this?

Re: low pass gate/vactrol

2003-04-02 by andrew dalio

Well, I have a Wiard Borg filter (which is a dual filter), which is
sort of based on the Buchla Low Pass Gate and the MS20 filter
(hench the name B-uchla + k-ORG). It's a FANTASTIC sounding
filter! However, it might do Doepfer good to make a vactrol filter,
since Wiard is discontinuing the series... Just a thought...

Low pass gates would be awesome!

Anything based on Buchla designs
has my vote.

2003-04-03 by Erik

Hi, but what about the possibility to buy the PIC for the MCV8 ???
I don't think there is any company that have a MIDI2CV with 8 CV out.
IF people who are DIY had the possibility to buy schematics,
adjustment procedure and PIC ( I guess you used a PIC for this
project)it will be great.
Keep up the good work.

MCV8, was: DOEPFER'S ANSWER to the possibility of offering kits.

2003-04-03 by Florian Anwander

Hi Erik

> Hi, but what about the possibility to buy the PIC for the MCV8 ???
Questions like these you should ask direct to Doepfer -> sales@doepfer.de

BTW.: As far as I remember the MCV8 did not use a PIC but a microprozessor
with a separate EPROM. So assumingly you would have to rebuild the complete
uP and ADC Hardware identically to the MCV8

Re: what about a 9 space case?

2003-06-05 by Bilinger

hi list

i am interrested as well in smaller case.
it can be practical for some live functions, practical to carry,
practical for just one type of sound.

also for new modules, I like the idea of manual trigger mixer.
very practical for playing A100 as a live instrument for avant garde
project like free improvisation.

it seems everyone is so much on with SOU and A154 which are
interresting projects. by the way I still think some very simple
modules like manual trigger mixer is really missing in this sense of
A100 as a music instrument.

please react boyyyyyys!!!!!

yes, and still the cost would not be significantly different. The hardest
part of my Paia kit and EFM kits were identifying the parts, once you do
that it's pretty simple to populate the board, but half the efm ones were
wrong, changed or missing...
Look at the price difference on the Blacet modules, $30 to $40 to have it
assembled, now whit Doepfer's manufacturing process and local I'd expect
close to the inverse... kits could be more expensive?
Also, look at Oakley-- they sell just PCB's of populated boards, why , 'cuz
kits are more expensive to put together and support.
Just get your diy projects from CGS, order parts from mouser--they come
neatly labeled. And front panels... yeah.. here we go again, make your own
in a different case or convince enough that a common design is viable and
pre-order.

what about a 9 space case?

6 just doesn't hold enough! or a 12.
both of course with equiv. psu's.

hello alexandre,

you can simply start a poll for the manual trigger mixer.
don't forget to specify the features/layout of the module.
you know, doepfer has many modules in the pipeline and
it is not practical, starting the development of another
module, as long as there are so many modules unfinished.
but you never know what the future brings ;-)

best wishes
