I've been debating between the A-137 and a Metalbox Wave Folder. Can anybody weigh in with some wildly biased opinions?

I definitely can subscribe this. The A137 is my favourite module from
the first moment.

Don't mix the input signal. Use one VCO as carrier and the other as
Modulator (I call it 'waveshaping cross modulation')!

This is not a trouble it is the best feature and one really important
note for every use of a wavemultiplier or distortion is:
If you want to modulate the effect dynamically (Envelope, LFO, ...), the
it is much better to modulate the level of the input signal instead of
modulating the waveshaping effect.

Example:
Not good:
         ENV
          |
VCO -> A137 -> VCA

Better:
        ENV
         |
VCO -> VCA -> A137

The best (and most simple) example is feeding a TR808 style drumset with
bass drum and different toms through the A-137. Use only very short
Hihats and no noise like clap or shaker.

I too must admid that the A137 is one hell of a module!
In the top 3 of my favourite A100 modules for sure!

I had the A137, sold it. Bought the Metalbox one,
still have it. I'd say the Metalbox has a MUCH
stronger effect on the waveform, to my ears.

cheers,

Re: A-137 ...Module of the year?

2005-10-25 by (i think you can figure that out)

Unless I'm mistaken, the Metalbox wavefolder is Ken Stone's
Wave Multiplier board with a fracplate. It this is the case, it's real
real close to the Serge multiplier and this was not intentional on
Ken's part - he didn't just copy Serge's. The Serge Wave
Multiplier is more in your face, that's for sure - but IMHO it's not
so good at sublety, and this is where the A137 kicks butt. For my
$$$, it doesn't always need to yell.

What's with the Metalbox sequential switch price? sheesh -
$400? You know what's in those things? Not much!

Re: A-137 ...Module of the year?

2005-10-25 by selfoscillate

hello bryan,

the metalbox/cgs wave multiplier incorporates three independent
wavefolders, but only one of these is voltage-controlled.
the other two are really simple and have manual control only.
one benefit of the module is that you can easily go
from "no effect" to "full effect". it is also a benefit to
have three folders, if you want to process more than one
sound at once with only one module. a drawback is that
the module sounds more dirty/noisy with high multiplicators
and that the overall sound is not so versatile.
not to mention the higher price compared to the a137.

the a137 is more versatile in terms of sound, it offers
more parameters, more voltage-control and it sounds
less dirty. the a137 incorporates one multiplier only,
but it is the most elaborated one.

if i had to choose one, i'd probably take the a137.

best wishes

ingo

or just buy two a137's and have lots of functionality
and super noisy sound at the same time!
best regards,
bakis.
