Re: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] floppies

2004-01-29 by Ralph Stokes

I have a few hundred HD disks I have been using with my SD-1 32voice for the last 11 years, and to my knowledge the only disks that have given me trouble were, firstly, some very old double density disks I recorded on 13 years ago, in Vancouver, with early VFX SDI & SDII Work (Likely worn out from over use, and from magnetic forces creating noise in the data, until the sound to noise ratio swallowed the data) and some "Majorly Cheap" High density "AT&T" branded HD disks from Staples, here in England (probably imported via the USA) where up to 25% of them would crash while formatting on my SD-1. This was a box of several hundred very cheap flimsy disks. Staples replaced the ones I returned, even though most appeared to work in my Laptop. I have never had a problem with any higher quality disks. Double Density Disks do not appear to be available here in the UK.

The HD Disks I currently use include:-
Fuji Film (Made in Germany)
Emtec
Imation
AT&T (wont buy again)

Old DD Disks I still use:-
Sony
Precision
3M
Dysan

Only AT&T gave me any problems. However, I know nothing of putting tape on the HD disks, as I have never done such a thing.

Hope this helps.

Ralph :-)

Although this solution seems to work there is some risk you should know
about: HD floppies have a different surface and are designed to be written
with a lower magnetic field to achieve the higher density without the tracks
interfering each other. As a result, treating them HD as DD floppies will
cause drop outs and errors. In other words: they don't like this cheating
and will probably let you down after a while if not instantly.

If you just want to use an HD floppy for a single transfer of data you might
be lucky. If you want to archive sounds and sequences you should better find
some real DD floppies unless you don't worry about loosing your data.

If you put a piece of tape over the HD sense hole, the computer, and hence
the Giebler programs won't know it's an HD disk, and it will work just fine.

Potential problem with HD disks......if you use the Giebler program on a
computer, it wont work w/HD

Does anybody out there know where to get double density floppy discs.

Mine

are all full and need space to store the stuff I'm working on....or will

Hd

density discs work?
Thanks, Rick
