Patches and discussion for Ensoniq VFX family

Maybe you could leave the keyboard controller connected but just disconnect the actual keyboard or is this what you did?
If that worked then you would have to recreate the front panel which might be interesting to do... 
Nice idea though! I think you will find that thats all that happens with the Access range of synths having repaired a few.
