Yes, they can, they send midi CC's and the VFX/SD responds to midi CCs  
for them....
IIRC, it is 1 CC, with values:
0 = 0 0
32 = * 0
64 = 0 *
127 = * *

*checks* yep, that's right, and its CC #70 (Sound Variation) - its even  
vaguely close to the standard CC :)
