If you, or anyone who's trying to use EDE with a newer OS that doesn't
support direct access to the floppy (i.e. Windows XP), and you have a
computer you can boot from floppy, I have a solution for you. You
have to trust that I'm a good guy and not spreading viruses, of
course. I recommend you virus-scan it thorougly, because although I
know you can trust me, you don't!

(You need two floppies: a 1.44M High density one to hold freedos,
EDE.EXE, and the disk image you're trying to extract; and a 720K low
density one to extract the disk image to.)

Here's a portion of what I wrote on Thu, 9 Oct 2003 13:11:37 -0500:

A way to run the program using XP

2004-04-10 by homebythe_sea

Hi all,

There is a compatibility mode that you can use to run older programs
like EDE under Windows XP..

Here is how:

1. Open Windows Explorer, and locate the the EDE program file
(the .exe file the starts the program)

2. Point your mouse at the file and RIGHT click the mouse.

3. Click on PROPERTIES, a window will come up.

4. Click on the COMPATIBILITY tab in that window.

5. you will see a box called "compatibility mode" Click on the check
box that says "run this program in compatibility mode for: "

6. AFter clicking that checkbox, right beneath it will be a drop
list that will offer " Windows 95, Windows 98, NT, 2000"

7. I suggest setting it to windows 95

8. Click on OK at the bottom.

9. After clicking on OK, go and doubleclick on the program in
Windows Explorer. It will now run in a windows 95 environment.

Try it and let me know if it works for you !

You can use this for any older programs that are not compatible with
Windows XP

I've spoken with the gentleman from Giebler... it WILL NOT work... (haven't tried it...) The way I understand it, there are files within DOS that are not in Windows ME and forward. XP compatability mode does not have these either...

True! There is no solution for XP or even NT based Windows systems. You would have to write a new floppy driver using Ring 0 programming...
Steves solution with DOS on a RAM Disk works very well for your purpose and is very simple.

AW: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] A way to run the program using XP

2004-05-12 by hans-artmann@t-online.de

I just found out that the following DOES work:
Create an XP (MS-DOS) startup disk and boot using this disk. To create a startup disk right click A:\, choose format and check the 'create MS-DOS startup disk' option.
If you have a FAT32 partition on your harddisk (which is a good idea anyway to store your valuable VFX image files) this will be the C: drive when you boot from the floppy.
E.g. you've created a FAT32 partition which could be let's say E: in normal operation while C: is NTFS and D: is your CD-ROM.
Now create a folder VFX on E: and put images, EDE or other tools into this folder...
After booting from the floppy you will be able to change to C:\VFX and run EDE and everything works fine.
Having a disk partition has some advantages over working with a RAM drive: you can permanently store your files and access them also in XP mode (after booting regularly) and do things like burning images created with EDE on CD-ROM or send sysex files via MIDI to your VFX etc.
If you have problems to create a FAT32 partition (you probably have if you don't know what a FAT32 partition is) better ask a PC guru to do it for you. It's not dangerous but I prefer not to desrcibe things which could put you in deep trouble if don't really know what you are doing (for the guru: Bootit NG works fine and is free).
Overall this is the most convenient way to deal with the good old stuff.
BTW, this should also work with NT, w2k, and Me.
