The VFX family was created before the bank select midi message was
standardized. There is certainly no direct way to send a bank select
message.

I belive the bank select message is two Continuous Controller
messages, CC #0 <MSB> CC #32 <LSB>. There is a VFX feature, I think
it's called X-ctrl, to be able to deal with an unusual CC#. But I
can't even remember if it deals with send or receive. Even if you
could send one CC message with it, I don't think you'd be able to get
it to send both CC #0 and CC#32.

I believe the TS-10 (next Ensoniq generation after the VFX and SD-1
series) got bank select messages.

To control a JV-1080, which has multiple banks, I use the method Dan
mentioned of placing all patches you want in one bank (the user
writable bank in my case).

The VFX (or SD1) does NOT send CC0, so you cannot do a bank change.

I pulled out my VFX SD manual to elaborate on my earlier response.
It will transmit and recognize the following control changes-
1-95
1 Mod wheel
4 Foot
7 Volume
10 Pan
70 Momentary Patch Select
71 Timbre Parameter
72 Release Parameter
100 Registered parameter select
101 Registered parameter select

As you can see, CC#0 is absent.
