A question for Richard

A question for Richard

2005-03-25 by paixwool

Hi there, In an earlier post you mentioned a diode replacement on
the power supply board to correct the problem of the display not
activating. I think I killed this diode by starting up when it was
still very cold! Anyway, I have opened it up and checked everything
on that board; everything is labeled, but only found C1, C2, C3, C5,
R5, and R6 suspect by using a volt meter. So where is the diode?
Those items sound like capacitors and resistors. Help please!
Dorothy

Dorothy,
You might want to download the file power.zip from
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/Ensoniq-VFX-SD/files/Tools/Schemati
cs/
There are some diodes CR1 to CR8 follwing the fuses. I can remember that
I had a dead display because one of the fuses was blown (I can't
remember which one it was). So it could well be one of these diodes.
Check the voltages given in the schematics to find out which circuit's
wrong.

The power supply hasn't changed very much from the vanilla VFX to the
SD.

I hope this helps,
Hans

I wanted to chime in that Mission66 advised that I change out all the
diodes with beefier ones to try and fix my VFX, whose display went
semi dead one day. I changed them and presto chango, it all works
again. Thank you. This is what the forum is all about. Remeber the
warning is that you can't keep flicking it on and off to try to "jump
start it" or you may blow up the boards and I am sure there is no
return....

Long live the VFX!!! Best MIDI controller in it's day and still today.

Dan

Hi Dan----Can you tell me where you got those "beefier" diodes?
Company and part number? I really need some!--Dorothy

AW: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] Re: Power Supply Diodes

2005-04-13 by Hans Artmann

The 1N4004 is referred to in the schematics. It's a rectifier diode with
400V/1A.
Look for a 400V/1,5A (e.g. 1N5395).
I don't actually think you need 'beefier' diodes. Find out which one's
died and replace it with the original type.

Oh well, the maker is e.g. Fairchild and you get it at any radio shack.

correct
a beefer speced diode wont do anything more
diodes are pretty basic
i would replace with exact part # called for
