VFXsd as a controller for Computer apps

VFXsd as a controller for Computer apps

2006-02-15 by john brusseau

I have had no luck in being able to use my VFXsd as a controller for my computer apps yet. There is such a dizzying array of documentation invovlved in a computer recording, and sequencing venture that I have gotten completely bogged down. I don't know anything, and don't really know where to go next for the information I amlacking.

I have hooked the midi in to my EMU 1820 midi out and vice versa, yet I can't get any sound in either my Cubase VST 5.0 app or my Mackie Traktion 2 app.(I do get Audio from the audio outs to my EMU 1820 ins.)

I have Win XP on a Pentium 4 computer with 2.4 GHZ processor, and 2 gig of Ram.

One of my most serious questions is is it possable to create music on a computer anywhere near as easy as it is on the Ensoniq VFXsd, or TS10? So far it seems that the process of creating music on computers is hoplessly non-creative. I would really like someone who knows both computer recording and the Ensoniq sequencers to give me some input on this.

I suspect this topic might be of interest to many of us Ensoniqers.

I have no problem using my VFX-SD as a controller connected to an 1820M. I
say "no problem" once I figured out how to used that damnable Patchbay
driver the 1820M requires. You probably need to change the setup in your
Patchbay application. Best bet is probably to dump the Emu on Ebay and get
something that has a more sensible driver. Although the 1820M has good
specs, I would never buy another Emu product based upon the obtuseness of
their software. If I don't need the mike preamps, I simply use the onboard
sound card in my computer and skip the 1820 altogether. Also I don't care
for the Cubase VST application at all. I end up using Power Tracks Pro from
PG Music since it is simple and powerful.
