RE: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] Re: Famous VFX footage (Rick Wakeman's solo)

Hello Vince and all af you.

This Rick Wakeman's solo belongs to a series of live concerts that Yes
components have been giving all around the world some years ago.
There is a disk called "ANDERSON, BRUFORD, WAKEMAN, HOWE: AN EVENING OF YES
MUSIC PLUS" (edited by Disky Communications in 1996, at least in Europe...)
corresponding to a 1989 concert at Shoreline.

The track is a mix of the 3 songs named "Gone but not forgoten", "Catherine
Parr" and "Merlin the Magician". I really cannot tell exactly which one, but
I think it is the third one.

There are lots of entries in the Web for "evening of yes music". I'm sure
you will find any detail you may need.

Goodbye from Barcelona.

Alfons

Re: Famous VFX footage (Rick Wakeman's solo)

Indeed, I do concur. This clip is Rick's solo from the ABWH concert that was broadcast live on Pay Per View in the US circa 1989. I have the entire show on VHS and really need to get around to capturing it to DVD. I saw ABWH perform at Great Woods in Mansfield, MA several months prior to the PPV broadcast. This solo by Rick appears to be the standard solo routine he was doing at the time. Don't know if or how much he may have deviated from it at other shows, but the PPV solo was identical to what I saw live. It was again impressive nonetheless. Unfortunately, Tony Levin had taken ill sometime before the PPV and was replaced by Jeff Berlin on bass. Tony and Bill Bruford performed an incredible percussive bass/drum dueling solo with Tony using his Finger Sticks. Wish there was a clip of that floating around! It was a great concert, just wish the PPV was from the show I went to.
If anyone is interested, I have a song called "Tempest..." which I did exclusively on my VFXsd (except the guitar and vocal). Take a listen at http://www.myspace.com/humanbehavior7 and let me know what you think. The VFXsd besides being an extremely powerful synthesizer workstation, it's one of the most versatile controller keyboards ever designed. I've been in love with it ever since I bought it new when it was first released, had the Mega Piano and expanded memory installed shortly thereafter. Thanx!

Re: Famous VFX footage

2006-02-22 by morten_karm

Hi,

thanks for this great video. It's nice to see musicians who are
playing in live, without sequencer (referring to the D-50 chiff flute
impressive solo theme).

I know that Rick Wakeman also used a VFX - among other synths - on the
Yes "Union" studio recorded album (Arista/1991). Some of the songs
keyboards parts on this album are also assumed by Tony Kaye (who did
not use a VFX, but rather E-MU samplers or Proteus sound modules).

Otherwise, I know too that Tony Banks used the VFX on the Genesis "We
Can't Dance" album (Warner/1991).

And that's all folk... Does anyone know who else did use the VFX synth
on his album or on stage?

Best Wishes,
Morten

Hi Tim!

I was a nearby neighbor. I lived in North Grafton, just outside
Worcester, MA (not very far from RI). Moved down here to Asheville,
NC (the home of Moog Music) about 13 years ago. Love the mountains,
very artistically inspirational. Thanx for the response!
