Power Supply question

Power Supply question

2006-03-02 by Paul Sparkes

Hi guys I'm new here but have been a VFX SD user for the past 8 years.
My original keyboards disk drive died and being based in New Zealand
couldn't get a replacement so ended up buying a US replacement
keyboard. However as it's 120 volts compared to NZ's 240 volts I need
a transformer to plug into. Can anyone provide me details of exactly
which transformer I need as far as the specs go, as there seems to be a
variety out there.

Thanks

Paul,

I'm not sure what I would recommmend for a transformer, but
from my experience, when I took my US keyboard to Europe and
tried using a transformer I had terrible results due to the
difference in frequency 50hz (non US) vs 60hz (US).

The display would flicker, and overall it just did not work
reliably.

I'm sure there's a solution, I just hope it's not too expensive.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the info. The other option I'm also considering is taking
the good disk drive out of the US imported keyboard and putting it into
my old one that died. Again though I'm not sure if there would be
issues regarding the difference in power voltage or if by the time it
got to the disk drive stage the internal voltage would be the same in
both keyboards.

hi guys,
i moved to paris a while ago and have had no problems using a transformer
(120 to 220) with my vfx sd.

Thats another good idea. I'm sure they didn't spend a heap of money
redesigning floppy drives with different power requirements and you
could easily (safely) swap them.

You'd save yourself the extra expense of buying a transformer which
can be expensive.

Maybe I just had bad luck with the transformer I used and the other
person living in Paris had something more suitable.

Another idea would be to swap the transformer in the unit. I think you
find the secondary voltages you need in the schematics - look at the
file section of the group.
Ok, you can also swap the drive from the US keyboard. But, what a
waste!!!!

Instead, you should get an old standard 3,5'' floppy drive and
reconfigure it for use with the VFX: there's something on the net how to
do it. You got to connect two pins and swap two wires of the connector,
thats all. I found that information related to the SQ-1 or so. It should
work for the VFX as well because the problem was the same with Ensoniq
using those Sugart drives.
The only tradeoff is that the VFX would not recognize when you've
removed the disk and swapped it for another one.
I've never posted this because Route66 are still offering drives and
this is surely the safest way to get it done. However, I understand that
shipping to Newzealand might be too expensive for you...

Play the game and win a VFX. It's nice to have two of them working.

Hans

Thanks Rick. Do you know what the power transformer
details were. It's just there seems to be a few on the
market with different ratings and I want to make sure
I get the right one for a VFX SD.

hey paul,
sorry to say that i dont know that much about the transformer. if was given
to me when i moved to paris by an american friend of mine who was moving
back to the states. it looks like a pretty basic one...pretty heavy, with
french plugs on both sides, so i have to use a plug adapter on one side for
my american machines. on side is marked 120 and the other 220. sorry i cant
be more specific. hope this helps.
