I have just bought a VFX.

Yes, I think so (although you won't have drawbars)...even sounds like ELP at times.....but you will either have to find some of the good presets and load them or do some programming of the sound yourself.....

Does this unit produce a good rock organ sound?

Thanks,
Eric

Thanks, do you have any idea where I can find some of the presets? and as
far as programming... I am very weak in that area, but I am getting
better.... I haven't got the VFX yet, but it should arrive in a couple of
days... I am looking forward to playing around with it..

Thanks for you help,
Eric

The stock presets are lame, and the Leslie sim is terrible. Perhaps if you get good at programming you can come up with something better.

Maybe the VFX-SD is better. I use the organizer sound and drawbars-1 regularly. IMHO using the tonewheel to start and stop the leslie sound gives and old B3 player like me the same sorts of control that I used to get with my B instead of that wishywashy press a little harder on the key like a Korg does.

I currently use a Roland VK-8M velcroed to the left side of my SD1,triggered by whatever light controller keyboard I happen to have....I used to use the Organizer and TimbreOrgan presets, but once you play a better Hammond clone you'll see what I mean. You can control the Ensoniq's Leslie sim with the foot pedal, IIRC.

Re: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] I have just bought a VFX.

2008-09-11 by Steve Wahl

I've never played a real B3. I have played a Hammond Spinnet on
occasion, which is a true tonewheel Hammond, but this particular one
doesn't have a leslie attached.  So I'm not highly qualified on this;
but...

I don't believe there's a difference between the VFX and VFX-SD as far
as the organ sounds are concerned. (VFX-SD added sequencer and some
drum/percussion sounds, VFX-SD-II added the mega piano; they have the
same organ samples and rotary speaker effects.) So any organ patch
(a.k.a. program) you come up with on a VFX-SD should work on a VFX.
(I have both.)

I get different, sometimes better organ sounds from my JV-1080 and the
Keyboards of the 60's and 70's expansion board, but I still use the
VFX sounds about half the time. My favorite is a variation on TIMBRE
ORG (I think that's what it was called). But I'm doing more
church/gospelly things, not rocking out... If you want to rock out,
be sure to try switching the effects to the rotary + distortion
setting (with any given organ sound).

On the patch version I use, I disabled the sustain function of the
sustain pedal (there's no sustain on a real organ anyway), and instead
use the sustain pedal to change rotary speaker speeds. That means I
can have both hands on the keybed. I have the dual foot pedal, and
use the other pedal as a patch select to select a different "drawbar"
setting.

Oh, and the dual sustain pedal I do with my right foot. Left foot is
on a CV pedal assigned to volume. I'd almost go so far as to say the
volume pedal is NOT OPTIONAL when playing organ sounds! If you don't
have one, you don't know what you're missing.

It is under effects....called roto-speaker or rotary speaker or something
like that...(don't have my VFX/SD1 on right now)

It is usually used with hammond/rock organ presets....

Where and what is this Leslie sim? Is it a patch?
Thanks;

Apply it to a piano patch for Pink Floyd "Echoes" sounds...

Rotary is good for a lot of sounds, Yes! We have a radiochannel in
Denmark called DR Electronica. Yester-night I heard a piece that
sounded like it was solely made on a VFX or at least using a LOT of
VFX sounds. Still in use 19 years after it's release - amazing
considering most people see it as a ROMpler...!

Thinking out-of-the-box is where the VFX's really shines :)

Happy New Year to You all!

I had a VFX-SD about ten years ago which I sold, then just recently got
a VFX. One of the things that surprised me was how many presets (I
found a site with a huge bunch of VFX, VFX-SD and SD1 presets) cropped
up on a lot of music that I own. I'm pretty sure the distinctive bass
on Front 242's "Headhunter" (which came out the same year the VFX did)
was a VFX preset...

The patches are uuencoded (oldskool) and gzipped. I don't know if Sean
McCreary is on the list, but I can make decoded copies available for
anyone who doesn't have a handy Linux box assuming he gives permission
to do so.

If you look at:

http://www2.pro-ns.net/~steve/music.html

You'll find this:

"For other's convenience, I've taken all the patches from the VFX Home
Page and UU-decoded and gunzipped them, then zipped them up into a
file called patches.zip."

http://www2.pro-ns.net/~steve/patches.zip

I don't think Sean's stuff saw any updates after I made the .zip file,
but let me know if I'm wrong there.

For a keyboard from the 80`s yes There is a leslie speaker simulation
in most organ presets either triggered from the mod wheel or the patch
select buttons OOPS I really don`t know as I own an SD1 32 voice which
has I believe, a different sample set

Re: I have just bought a VFX.

2009-01-08 by Claus

The organ samples are the same. But in the VFX SD-1 and the SD-1 (32
voice) some of the ekstra percussive waveforms are good for organ
percussion!

I have routed the slow/fast to a foot pedal (I have the double one)
and a volume to swell. It's not a B3 but setup right, it can growl as
well :)

Best, Claus

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
