Welsh's Synth Cookbook

Welsh's Synth Cookbook

2009-09-26 by jeff

Has anyone here ever checked into Welsh's Sythesizer Cookbook? I've a number of different synths and am always looking for ideas. I'm wondering if any of you have seen the book and if it's worth the $20.00.

dont bother its just the same basics for all sytnths telling you about oscilators amp envelope and filter envelope pitch envelopes lfo and the like ideas behind fm and additive nothing that aint already in most manuals
if you want to learn more then google theres loads of free info on different synthesis tecniques save your money

Re: Welsh's Synth Cookbook

I have it and it's very good indeed...

the different approach is the main idea to reverse engineering a sound before you try to make it from scratch... so you also get some software tools for sound analisys and stuf like that...

I don't think you throw away your money if you buy it, anyway soundonsound has very good synthesis articles, but no patches 'how to'... http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/allsynthsecrets.htm

greetings

i found the section (ok, about a quarter of the book) talking about sound
structure for synthesizers to be great. the 'cookbook' section is mostly
'classic' synth aounds.. 70s and 80s analog sounds, and aubtractive
imitations of real sounds. His technique for reverse-engineering synth
sounds is interesting if a bit complex.

Re: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] Welsh's Synth Cookbook

2009-09-26 by jammie

i think transwave synthesis is a great synth feature and i have been creating a massive amount of transwaves some are ppg emulations of there wavetables also a lot of microwavext emulations but my wavetables are much smoother as they are 128 single cycles instead of the 64 of the waldorfs synths also mine are actual waveforms and not several single cycles and computer intrpolation of wave forms
i have been doing resynthesis of samples into transwaves aswell very neat ive created trans waves of bass drums and snares and ebasses when resynthesised they only take up 15-20 single cycles so i can have a transwave of 20 cycles and if i put a fast envelope on it it plays just like a normal snare drum but if i put a slow envelope on it sweeps through the 20 cycles slowly creating pads which you cant do on any other synth or sampler
you can synthesis looped drums into spectra and have melodic loops of spectra if played fast or you can get realy bizare sound scapes by using slow lfo to sweep through the tables
i can emulate any waldorf mwxt patch as i can use the same structure as a mwxt as the ensoniq can have 2 voices and all the same modulation sources as the mwxt but the ensoniq machines the eps16/asr10/asrx can have upto 8 layers so thats 4 mwxt in 1 patch

How do you do "doing resynthesis of samples into transwaves" ?
i didnt know you could put samples back into the VFX?

Cheers

Re: Welsh's Synth Cookbook

of course it is, but you can't use your own transwaves with the VFX, I think only EPS TS and ASR can...

Re: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] Re: Welsh's Synth Cookbook

2009-09-29 by jammie

its a software program ive been working on its going to be a vsti instrument when finished
which is going to be free when done as i cant charge as its based on tm technology
it was an fizmo emulation but i decided to by pass that as the transwaves i have created go way beyond those of the fizmo and ts12/vfx/sq1/2/ks32 they can also be used in the eps16+ and asr10 i will be releasing 200 transwaves in the 64 wave format of the waldorf wave and micro wave wave forms in 128 step single cycle transwaves
alass its impossible to add them to the vfx with out a rom update and additional romms to hold the wavesamples and some sort of swithching logic to access the extra wave forms but for this we would need the code for the os and thats impossible to get
its been done on the sq80 though but thats not a transwave synth it just has a wavetable of single cycle wave which it can choose upto 3 different single cycles it does not have the ability to sweep through the transwaves
that did not come until the eps16+ and its variants vfx/asr10/sq1/2/ks32/ts12/10/and fizmo/mr and later synths

Re: Welsh's Synth Cookbook

great news indeed!

I did hope I was gonna read something like that, because I knew that
this would not have been possible with the VFX/SD1 (not without big modifications...)

so now it's not a secret anymore :)

did you already give a name to your VSTi?

is it somehow similar to Terratec KOMPLEXER?

Wow, this is exciting. I've three EPS16+ waiting, 2 rack and
one keyboard and I was about selling one or two of them.
Now I'll wait for what's gonna come up here.

Please please keep us updated.

Re: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] Re: Welsh's Synth Cookbook

2009-09-30 by jammie

no i have made wave tables for complexer with the help of assi but they are not as smoth as transwaves
they are made up of 32 single cycle waves and the vsti uses interpolation algorythum to morf between the wave forms this is what the waldorf mwxt does
but mine are actual waves and the trans wave modulator actualy sweeps through the wave table 1 single cycle at a time it does not jump to a wave form but must go through each of the waveforms to get to the position that the mod wheel or envelope is
and the transwaves are tiny in size 4k and some even smaller you can stqack them 8 layers and detune them and make them mono to make massive lead unison sounds ala massive by native instruments but the ensoniq blow that soft synth out of the water especialy when you use different filters for each layer and different panning settings huge fat sound with only a small amount of memory
if you want a copy of my komplexer wave tables give me a shout and ill make them available also goto stromeko synth site he has a load of komplexer wave tables for free download he is also the person who provided the data for the waldorf mwave and mwxt all waves data and there spectra info for me to copy the mwaves tables to transwaves

great news indeed!

I did hope I was gonna read something like that, because I knew that
this would not have been possible with the VFX/SD1 (not without big modifications...)

so now it's not a secret anymore :)

did you already give a name to your VSTi?

is it somehow similar to Terratec KOMPLEXER?
