Ensoniq VFX board connector

Ensoniq VFX board connector

2010-05-04 by suppers_ready86

Hi all,

My VFX has the famous calibration error problem. Someone already applied the hard wire but over time, that seems to fail too. I desoldered all wires but wasn't able to solder new wires in place (my solder skills are not that good and the space is fairly small)

Besides, I have the idea that that mod only works for a period but will wear out eventually too as the wires come in direct contact with the keys above and thus can wear (which is what happened here I think. The wires where a bit on the long side, though these where the yellow jumper wires that ensoniq provided).

I was looking for a different solution. One of the things I had in mind was hardwire but from the bottom of the circuit boards (whereas the wires where soldered on top of the board).

When browsing ebay I noticed an auction with this board for sale:

http://i.ebayimg.com/21/!BqZ2ofg!mk~$(KGrHqEOKisEuZjHqP5+BLvk1(8gDw~~_12.JPG

That image shows a connector. Is that the original connector for the VFX board? If so, wouldn't it be better to just desolder that connector and resolder it on the bottom of the board to make sure the keys don't have contact with it?
Somehow, these connectors are a bit easier to solder on and they seem more sturdy to me.

Anyone have any suggestions, ideas or tips?

p.s.: does the SD-1 still have these problems or did ensoniq already fixed those? And is it possible to use a different keyboard in a VFX? (like one with a single circuit board instead of 2)

hard wiring should be done from under neath not on top were the keys are
the scanner rom can also become currupted due to bad connections causing shortings which scramble the rom
