I have erased my Sequencer OS accidentally! Nothing I try works...

2010-05-30 by cappuchino_blue

Hello.
I think I have managed to make a new record here. I have bought the VFX SD for £162 a couple of weeks back from eBay. I received it in beautifully working condition and instantly was satisfied.

Three days after having it, I then went to test the floppy drive by writing 60 programs to the floppy disk. They wrote fine, but immediately after the operation was finished, I pressed the sequencer button and got 'Sequencer Must Be Loaded' instead of the sequencer loading. After seeing the message, I reset it and had the same thing. I then later discovered that resetting it erases the sequencer (oops).

I now am stuck with a sequencer which has some lovely sounds and presets, but no sequencer. The sequencer is the most important part to me. Here is what I have tried:

I have tried starting EDE in windows command prompt (Windows XP). Version 109 worked but I got an address mark error. 107 and 108 wouldn't start.

I then used a utility which made EDE bootable by creating a ram disk. That worked fine except 109 gave me a 'sector not found' error. I put this down as using an HD disk rather than the DD disk I should be using. I bought 10 brand new DD disks only to find out my floppy drive doesn't support DD disks.

EDE 107 and 108 at startup give me an error before even starting up to the program, but after being written to the ramdisk. The error occurs when I type 'EDE' (without quotes) into the FreeDOS prompt. I will post the error in a comment if required. Just post a reply saying if you need this error.

NOTE: I am using an IBM USB floppy drive.

Omniflop doesn't work with USB drives. It does however, work in VMware Player where the VM detects the USB drive as built in via a virtual floppy controller. Omniflop isn't supposed to work with virtual hardware, but in my case it did and it formatted successfully. The only problem with this method is that I can't write to the disk.

When I put the disk formatted in Omniflop into my synth, it said it wasn't formatted and bought me up to the format page.

Can anyone help me with this? I could just go out and buy a disk, but before I shell out all the money (and I can't be bothered waiting for it to arrive from the USA to the UK), I want to see if I can create my own disk.

Thanks in advance. I know this post is confusing, so if you need any clarification on anything, post a reply and I will be more than happy to explain further.

Once again, many thanks in advance.
Jonathan.

I don't think that EDE works with a USB floppy drive either. Do you have access to a computer with a built-in drive?

is it possible (and legal?) for somebody to post a raw disk image which would allow makign a new sequencer disk without the EDE program?

Re: I have erased my Sequencer OS accidentally! Nothing I try works...

I don't have access to a computer with a floppy drive at home, but at school we have some really ancient machines. I'm sure they'd work, just I don't really want to ask them unpess it's a last resort.

My computer has a floppy controller built in, just no floppy disk drive. I suppose I could always ask around for an internal one...

I have found under the files section of the group a file called VFX Tools.zip. I have downloaded and extracted that so I'll try it from FreeDOS at bootup. I'm expecting for it not to work, but I'll have a go anyway.

Re: I have erased my Sequencer OS accidentally! Nothing I try works...

2010-05-31 by cappuchino_blue

Oh well, as expected, the disk tools didn't format or write.

Formatting gave me track not verified error's for every step until it got to the end when it have me some FAT format error.

When writing, the error was very simple. It was looking for an .img file, not an EDV file.

Back to the drawing board I guess. Any further help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jonathan.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
