Ensoniq MIDI

2002-02-02 by Tom Hunt

Ok.. this is a very basic question .. I know..

What is the easiest way to hook my SD-1 up to my PC? I have a 1 ghz Celeron
with plenty of slots.

Do I need to get a midi sound card?

Can anyone offer a suggestion for a nice but reasonable solution>

Thanks!

Tom

I am assuming that you have some sort of sound card aready in your system.
Then all you need is an adapter to hook it to your joystick port. They run
around $20 or $30.

It is not necessarily to cost 20-30$.
You can also by an Y-cable, which you connect in your joystick port,
which cost around 5$.

RE: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] Re: Ensoniq MIDI

Where can you buy one for $5.00 ? I work for a music store, and our
wholesale cost for a Y-cable is nearly $20.00. I'd like to know where you
are getting them for $5.00 so we can start ordering them from there.
Thanks

I've never seen them that low, either. The going retail rate 'round here
is about $20.00 for a 5-footer and about $30 for a longer one. I
occasionally see them for about 1/2 this at computer shows.

20$?! I bought my cable for 75 s.kr, which is almost 7.5$. New, from
music store here in Sweden.

My sound card, live drive-2, did I by for 25$, which mean that i
don't use my y-cable...

cheers/

Re: Ensoniq MIDI

If you have about $200-250.oo this is what i would do.

1. Purchase a Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum. (Do not get the Sound
Blaster Live Platinum. The Audigy is ASIO compliant whereas the Live
is not. This makes a big difference if you plan to use your keyboard
with Steinberg Software.) Plus the software package with the SBA is
awesome.

2. Purchase both Midi Cables and a Phone-to-RCA composite plugs. A
big plus with SBA is that all the audio connections are on the front
of the computer.

3. Use the midi to do your midi stuff ;-), but more importantly, use
the phono-rca plugs to input/output the actual sounds from the
keyboard. Boy do I hate it when I make a midi song...only to output
it it on my computer, and playing it back using cheapy synthesized
soundcard soundfonts.

4. Another plus to this setup is that you can download midi files
from the net, play it back through your keyboard, then record it as
wave files for future projects.

5. Steinberg...;-)

The possibilities you leave for yourself using this setup is endless.
