can I use any 720KB drive in my SD-1.  My drive has gone bad.

No I am afraid that a standard disc-drive wont fit. You need one
that is configured for the synt itself. And these are very expesive
if you compare it to a standard pc-floppy. Something like 100$ or
so ! Look here for info ....

Well you can try it but chances are the drive pin out will not conform to the 
VFXSD settings, I have new replacement drives available at our web site.

What drive is it in the Amiga-500?
