question about the floppy disk reader

question about the floppy disk reader

2010-08-16 by chabot652002

Hello Everybody,

I have owned a VFX-SD from 1990 to 1995.

I originally joined this group to ask questions for a friend of mine.

But to talk and read about the VFX + the fact that i also own a Fizmo (and love the trans waves) gave me the idea to get another VFXSD.

So now that the VFX is back into my studio, i have a very boring question to ask: is the floppy disk reader standard?

Mine is working fine but i guess one day it will break.

Among the members of this forum, i guess there must be people who had to replace their disk reader. So can we use any kind of reader or we must find a special one for the VFX?

Thanks for your help.

Is it possible to use HD disquettes? I also forgot this detail 15 years later...

Jacques

The floppy drive is a DD (double-density) drive, not an HD one. For
the best possible results, use DD diskettes. If you have none other
available then you _can_ use HD diskettes, but they're really intended
for use with HD drives, so may deteriorate and lose their data more
quickly.

Replacement floppy drives for the VFX can be bought from Route 66
Studios, http://route66studios.com/ .

An alternative that might be a longer-term solution is to replace the
actual floppy drive with a floppy drive emulator, which offers read-
write capability of floppy drive images off an SD card: see http://www.torlus.com/floppy/
.

Best wishes,

Thanks Christian for that very useful answer and great links.

Using DD discs is not a problem since i have lots of these still.

I would be curious to know if anybody have tried this floppy emulator on their VFX.

Re: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] question about the floppy disk reader

2010-08-16 by Christian Brunschen

I haven't tried it with a VFX-SD, but there's a video on youtube
showing someone using it with their EPS-16+ :

	http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r09ZJPwi3eU

The EPS-16+ uses the same floppy drive as the VFX-SD, as far as I
know, so it should work equally well on a VFX-SD as on am EPS-16+ .

Best wishes,

Re: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] question about the floppy disk reader

2010-08-16 by jammie

the floppy emulator works on ede disk format it can write to sdcard 2gb thats a lot of floppy disks
it is known to work with eps/eps16+ i have seen 2 machines work with these samplers asr10/ts10/12 i have seen 1 working with a ts10
vfx and vfx sd and asrx these i have not seen but they work from ede disks so i would expect them to work also
the sd floppy emulator are selling for £60 which is comparible to a floppy drive but you could store thousands of floppy images i doubt that there are even a 1000 floppy disks for it
they even work with a mirage
