VFX-SD's Factory conversions to SD1-32

VFX-SD's Factory conversions to SD1-32

2010-10-05 by surfermarketing

Hello Group
I have 2 VFX-SD's that were Factory conversions to SD1-32 voice. I used to work at a music store and I know the factory came up with this upgrade for about a year. One burnt out and I shipped it to Thesonq. Unfortunately for be I was ill for a while and by the time I contacted him it was used for parts. I don't use the other two because I know they were very rare even when the conversion were done. Other than buying Rte 66's e-Cooler (doing so anyway for live)synth does run hot, does anyone know what other issues there were. Should I replace power supply with a 32 voice supply. I don't want to burn out these last two, rather keep them at home and use my other 32's live.
Thanks
Mark

I have a VFX-SDII that got the factory upgrade to an SD1-32. It remains as one of the best investments that I ever made and I have yet to see such a good offer made by any other vendor. Too bad Ensoniq is gone.

I only have one problem in that the battery backed up memory gets scrambled on ocassion. It seems to be related to either the power on or power off cycle. So I always keep floppies handy because a power poblem at a job site could cause an unexpected loss of memory which would be a disaster!

And yes, my unit runs hot and I am waiting for a new batch of coolers to be made this winter so that I can buy one.

Your posting mentions two units that were upgraded, one of which was sent in for repair but got cannibalized. Yet suddenly there are still at least two that you have. So it is a bit confusing.

Have you changed the batteries in your units?

Paul

Going back to playing live and don't like to tear down my home stuff (don't want everyone to think I'm obsessive compulsive). I use the different keyboards when switching sounds with different effects to avoid that effect timing glitch.

I think that add ups to 12 VFX series keyboards....no doubt, you are bordering on obsessive compulsive and in love with the VFX lady (and her sisters). I should know, I have over 35 different synths and am also in denial....but only 1 VFX and 1 SD/32.....

Re: VFX-SD's Factory conversions to SD1-32

I used a VFX-SDII back in the 90's that never had problems, at least after the keyboard mod. Ensoniq threw in the upgrade for free to make it an SD1-32.

It ran hot, but at outdoor gigs the temp seemed to be okay. I used to have 2 VFX-SDs, and SQ2 32-voice (bought it new in the early 90's and lost it in the 2008 floods at church), and an SQ1+ 32-Voice.

I still have one VFX-SD and have now switched to the SQ-R modules in my rack. I can never seem to part with the VFX-SD. Even though it sits in the corner and stares at me, I cannot get rid of it. still does stuff that no other synth can do.

When I do take the VFX-SD live, I made a fan for it. I bought a small fan (computer type fan), added velcro to the VFX, right in front of the heat sync. I then added a strip of velco to the fan and mount that. There is a power supply for the fan from Radio Shack and it works just fine.

Another thing I considered was actually cutting a small fan shaped hole on each side and actually mounting a fan in the unit and the other side would have a grill so the air could escape. This would cool down the unit too.

The fan thing ran abut $15. Radio Shack has all the parts and it really does work well. I love the fan unit from Route 66 Studios, but if it takes a really long time to get them, then this is a great alternative.

Grace,
Harry

Well personally I have a VFX, SQ1plus32 & thanks to Jammie, a working TS-10.

I'd buy more VFX/SD's at the drop of a heart beat though...Frustratingly wonderful & I've barely scratched the surface.

Looks nice too.

Re: VFX-SD's Factory conversions to SD1-32

2010-10-08 by The H-Man

I have always really wondered abut the E-Primes. There seems to be little information about them online, or I just cannot find the info myself. I would love to learn about them.

By the way, there is an ebay auction for two VFX-SDs from an estate sale going on right now for $600. They say that they are in excellent condition and also have the Mega-Piano waves sticker on the top of the board.

I have much more gear than just the Ensoniqs myself as well, but they do play an important role in my rack. Of the two SQ-R units in my rack, one handles very high strings and the Mystic patch (the Merlin patch on the VFX). The other handles the Super Pad sound as well as a modified drum kit to layer the other drum kits I have running.

I would love to have a regular VFX too, just for soloing.

Grace,
Harry
