Older (Ensoniq) gear & the power of limitations
2012-02-03 by Scott
Folks, I'm feeling grateful for other users posting, trying to help me with my VFX dilemma, so I thought I'd post a link that might be interesting (also, you might find it wretched, but who knows?!) I just did a small MIDI project for a class that I'm in, where we were limited to using 4 MIDI tracks for a 90-second project (and a bunch of other constraints that aren't important), and an accompanying 90-second explanation. What may be interesting is that all the other students (who range anywhere from 15 to 30 years younger than me) used soft-synths in Logic or Reason, etc, that allowed the use of FX plugins and all kinds of other "fancy" stuff. Everyone but me did it "in the box", I used an ESQ-M with no overdubs or FX or etc etc. The point is that all students had to rate everyone else's project in several ways and mine was selected as "best overall" (in fulfilling the assigned requirements) - and this was using an 8-voice rack synth from 1987! In other words, I was on a moped and they were all on Harley-Davidson motorcycles. It goes to show that just because something is old and technologically obsolete, doesn't mean it can't be useful! -- Scott http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMAXWfVXvw0&feature=youtu.be
