USB and MIDI

2013-09-23 by musicwithharry

Ok, here is the scenario...

Let's say someone just bought the Yamaha DGX-650 keyboard. It does not have traditional MIDI, but rather USB MIDI.

I've been doing some research to see if there is some kind of USB to MIDI cable system that would allow one to connect the DGX-650 to a standard MIDI device, like, let's say an Ensoniq VFX-SD.

I know of the MIDI cables with USB because I use them now to interface with the computer but I was thinking more in lines of a live situation.

The reason being is that there are a lot of good keyboards out there that only sport the USB MIDI jack on the keyboard and so as a controller or whatnot, it is useless onstage, unless you get a computer in the mix and control the traiditonal MIDI gear through the computer interface from the USB MIDI connection on the keyboard.

Any ideas or suggestions? I would have figured that someone would have created something by now to make that happen.

Harry

I think that I may have found one from Kenton.

http://www.kentonuk.com/products/items/utilities/usb-host.shtml

They are talking Class-compliant for the USB-MIDI device and I would assume that the modern keyboards with USB-MIDI only are class-compliant?

Has anyone used this device from Kenton? Does it work?

That would be cool if ti did, because then people could buy some of those lower priced Casio Privia units that have great action and be able to control their older MIDI keyboards from them...
