You can try the 7 on off deal (It does work) but make sure the on off seq is at 2 second intervals, it will auto reinitialize on the 8th time.
It's actually better to just hold down the PRESETS button while pressing the upper left SOFT button, then answer yes to erase memory and reintialize.
If you need a hard reset and you have the unit open you can short the minus side of the battery to the bottom left pin on the 28 pin (32 pin if expanded) memory expander U1.
For the VFX users out there, this last resort is the only way to reinitialize a VFX with OS 1.72 or lower.
