Internal 4x expander Ram for the VFX/SD1 Series

Internal 4x expander Ram for the VFX/SD1 Series

2003-04-25 by mishon66@aol.com

How many people here would be interested in having a internal 4x expanded Ram in the VFX/SD1?
This setup would consist of a special card inside the VFX/SD1 that would allow the user to switch to either the cart slot or one of the other four Ram banks. It would be like having 4 extra carts available and you would still be able to save to and from the 4 positions.

It would be very nice (indeed) if these extra memory locations could be
accessible via midi pgm selections (i.e., bank select).

Even nicer if sequences using sounds from these extra locations can
correctly point to these extra locations. This would open up the range of
sounds for composition (or help establish a reasonable 'semi-permanent'
library) without having to keep shuffling the internal memory and cartridges
which would be a big advantage.

It seems that these mods could only be possible if you were modifying the
actual OS / program code in which case, wow!

Another question - would this mod still allow the cartridge slot to be
used - in addition to the 4 x RAM?

Regardless, I would be interested - price depending ofcourse..

As others have said, it depends on the cost and if the sequencer can find
and save to these locations.

This acts just like a cart but is switch-able between 4 additional memory banks and the original cart. You would have to manually select which memory bank you wanted to work from.

No OS mod is necessary at all.

Yes..but you would have to switch to the cart position.

My thoughts on the pricing: We all know that the VFX series is not a $1000 machine, it's prices range is now around $300 to $600. With this in mind it's clear that no one is going to spend hundreds of dollars on a memory expander and the ability to manufacture memory boards now is quite inexpensive. I can't give an exact pricing but the range could be around $50 to $80.

I could see this being useful. The $50 to $80 is fine.

As long as we're disussing innards: Have you found if a S/PDIF output
could be accomplished? I may have to buy the schematic myself, I
guess.
