VFX-SD1 as a controller

VFX-SD1 as a controller

2000-11-12 by Michael Barnes

Greetings,

I'm new to this forum, just sign up today, and had been using
the VFXSD-1 as a midi controller and sound module. Being that
it is not a general midi instrument (I would prefer to lay down my
tracks in general midi), would anyone here have a suggestion for
which midi controller I should use or buy. I generally use Vision
software for sequencing on a Mac G3 and use the Opcode
Studio 4 as a midi intertface. I also use a Proteus 1XR and
Roland JV 880 as sound modules.

I never heard of a VFXSD-2, is that a general midi instrument?

> Hi Micheal, the best bang for the buck and still one
of the finest contollers after all these years is the
Akai MX-73. Yup, you guessed it, 73 keys, synth touch,
with more useful realtime control options than you can
shake a joystick at. Basically outputs on 4 selectable
channels simultaneously, and 4 selectable progchanges
in 100 patchesque groupings, has eight CC controller
switch/slider either/or pedal controls, loads of
layering/splitting, and quite a few extra goodies. My
Kurzweil trembles in its presence...oh ya, built like
a tank, all metal construction, and is lighter than
a SD-1. And now the good news, they can be had in the
$200+ dept. This is my stage machine, and works
wonders in the studio with four mods hooked up to it.
Oh ya, it is a dedicated controller that goes well
with anything that bleeps and chirps. Cheers all,
Keith

Thanks for the info Keith;

Sounds pretty impressive to me. I've been looking around and
found out there is also an Akai MX-76 controller. Still have not
confirmed whether or not the Akai MX-73 is a general midi
instrument and/or available for purchase at this time. I also have
been considering a Roland A-70 as a controller. Are you familiar
with the Roland A-70 as a controller?

you say general midi, I tend to think of the GM sounds
that are in each patchchange slot as "universal" Piano
being #1
up to gunshot #128, so the MX-73, not having any
soundbanks, only patchchange banks, and only works as
a controller for synths that do have soundbanks. They
are around up for sale periodically as these type of
controller synths seem out of fashion for the last few
years. As for Roland, I never met one I liked but
there's a kazillion folks who love 'em, so "chaque son
gout". The A70 is very heavy unit that makes playing
live a torturous ordeal, I'd recommend the K2500 at
half the weight and twice the beauty. Cheers, Keith
