My thought was to use a MIDI foot controller (i.e., Roland FC200) to access the patch selects, leaving both hands free for playing. It does appear that this might be doable, by setting the footswitches to send the appropriate value on controller 70.

Hmmmm.... Controlling via MIDI may allow that to some extent.

I never thought about looking to see if global things can be changed 
via midi sysex. Sounds like a project.

I use a Kenton Control Freak to take care of controlling things via 
MIDI and setting up my synths - could be a fun thing to explore.
