RE: [Fairlight-CMI] Series III MIDI

2004-08-19 by Chris Haworth

Peter - which input port of the midex are you connecting it too? Mine can
be a little fussy if not 1 or 8.

Back to first principles, when you press a key or move a control on the
Fairlight keyboard, does the corresponding LED on the midex's front panel
light up?

This will determine whether the fault is in the Fairlight / cable set-up as
opposed to a Cubase config setting.

Rgds,
Chris.

Hi Chris,

Thanks...

I am getting no MIDI information at all. The INPUT meter doesn't light up.

Cheers,
Peter

      Peter,

Setting up the Series III to act as a master keyboard can be tricky
      and the
manuals are essentially no help with this whatsoever.

I too use Cubase / midex 8 in my set-up and what I ended up doing was
setting up a 'dummy' system within the Fairlight which effectively
'local-offs' the Fairlight keyboard. The reason for this is that what
usually happens when you connect a Series III to an external
      sequencer is
that you get a midi-loop generated when you press a key on the
      Fairlight
keyboard. This is due to the implementation of the keyboard to CPU
connection, which is effectively posting midi information to input
      port D
on the Fairlight. I load this .sy file each time I boot the Fairlight
      and
then load the instruments / voices into this, which means I can play
      the
Fairlight voices (and all my other gear) from the Fairlight keyboard
      within
      Cubase.

BTW I have my Fairlight connected to Ports 1 on the Midex. It is not
      clear
from your mail whether you are just not getting any midi info in
      Cubase
(i.e. the little meter doesn't light up when you press a key or move
      a
control) or whether you are getting the midi loop type problem
      described
      above.

If no one else has responded by the end of today, I will document the
configuration I use when I get home tonight and will post it to you
      tomorrow.

      Best regards,
      Chris.

Ok, I'm having problems using my Series III keyboard as a
      master/controller
keyboard. I have all the relevant connections to and from my MIDEX
      8's. I
can control the Fairlight from Cubase, ie it receives MIDI
      information, but
it won't send any information from the Fairlight to Cubase. My other
      two
keyboards (XTk & AN1x) work just fine.

I've fiddled with the MIDI Port (A-D) and various other relevant
      settings,
      but this makes no difference.

Is there something unique to the Fairlight regarding MIDI or should
      it just
work as any other MIDI controller keyboard?

Any help is greatly appreciated, as usual :-)

      Cheers,
      Peter
