I read in the archives an unconfirmed message (#2814) that it's OK to leave the battery off 
the card. The only downside would be that you have to enter the date and time each time 
the Fairlight boots up.

So I'm going to try it without the battery. Unless someone can confirm that the battery is 
really needed.
