RE: [Fairlight-CMI] Re: Series III Upgrade to rev 9.34

2003-10-29 by Peter Connelly (Core Design Ltd.)

Hi Laurent,
Looking back, it would've been 'easier' to buy from Horizontal. I did get a very good price on my 6.03 machine and Peter supplied the upgrade (on the same machine) for a discounted price, so it worked out ok, probably about the same. Initially, I wasn't bothered about an upgrade but as soon as I got my machine and played with it for a while I saw its limitations, especially when it came to sound storage.
I'm not sure what is involved in the whole upgrade process, but I think there is a waveform superviser board installed, there are new startup ROMS, 4 gig HD replacing the old 120Meg HD, but I requested the 8" drive and Tape Streamer to remain in use. There's a lot of soldering going on too, but not sure exactly what. The machine also gets a full service. I'm sure Peter would give you a full run down of what work is carried out.
I didn't kept the old HD but assume you could have them back if requested. To me I didn't see any point.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Peter

Hi Peter,

Can you tell us more about the upgrade process ? Have your machine be upgraded
or do you receive another one ? What hardware is changed ? Do you keep the old
parts ?

There's something I don'tunderstand... Why did you bought a rev6.03 to upgrade it ?
Was it not easier to directly buy a rev9.34 machine from Horizontal Production ?
Or is it cheaper to choose the upgrade path ?

Best regards.

Laurent.
