The K1 was my first proper keyboard... I got bored with it quite quickly, back in the day, but I would love to get hold of one again... possibly a K1 mkII

Forget faking a CMI. I tried it for years. It's the same with a MiniMoog and all the other vintage synths that became favourites. You can't completely replace them. Some sounds can, but the sounds that you can't reproduce, that's the part that makes it a favourite vintage.A CMI IIx is very cheap right now and I'm pretty sure it will go up in price. (I was a vintage synth specialist back in the 90's and still am a collector. I did a lot of testing and comparing, for myself and for customers.)With that said, I can make a suggestion. Try a Kurzweil K2X00. For some sounds a MicroWave (The fisrst version with software ver.2) comes to my mind. Less powerfull sound but for spacey Fairlight-type sounds a Kawai K1 is pretty neat. I personally like them a lot and have all previous mentioned in my collection.A Roland D-50 comes also to my mind and last but not least Ensoniq SD-1.Hope this helps. Please let me know what you end up withRegards,Peter Kersten.---------------------------------------------------

good at creating a textural sound with some meat to it. All other synths
have a sheen to them. But I feel the cmi has a depth and grit to the
sound that makes me interested, but im not sure Im into the price right
now. Could I just fake it with something cheaper is what Im thinking
