It turned out that it has the plastic laminate. This is now starting to suffer from well known problem of "rot".
The CRT was new when I bought the unit, so I was very happy with it. Not so happy when I noticed the first signs of rot last night...

What's wrong with the one that's in it? Bad screenburn? If it's gone low emission you may be able to borrow a "booster" from the oldest dustiest TV repair shop you can find...
