Hi everybody Will someone be able to tell me which hard drives the CMI III can use and how large the drives size limit is? I'll prefer any 3½ inch hard drive if possible. I'm on OS 6.03. why I ask this is because I want to connect an external hard drive to the CMI for backing up existing drives. Thanks and my best to all of you in this community Brian

I installed one drive at a time i an external casing and set drive to scsi id 6 with parity on. But when trying to access the drive with the format command: scsiformat /c600 -b=1024 -g I get the error code: Error #216 path not found. The case and connectors work when I put the original drive back in. Can you tell me what is wrong here.......anyone? Best regards Brian

Hello Brian,
If your CMI is a rev 6.03 (with a CMI-33 wave processor) and not
an upper release level (with the CMI-41 wave supervisor), the only
hard-disks which are compatible are not SCSI one... The hard-disks
were ESDI with a converter board from Adaptec. This board was able
to drive two ESDI disks and was seen as one SCSI device by the CMI.
You have three solutions to your problem:
- find some ESDI disks and an Adaptec board to add some external
disks to your CMI.
- Use the DC600 tape streamer or the WORM to archive your data.
- Upgrade your CMI hardware & software to a newer release which
support standard SCSI devices...
Hope this helps.

Hi Laurent Thanks for replying to me. I appreciate it :-) On bootup my Fairlight says this: ----------------------------------------------------- OS 9, Level 2, V5.14FK, 26. october 1988 IOpack V3.22 Generel release 6.03. ----------------------------------------------------- Inside the cardholder I can find a card in slot CMI-33 but no print in the metal bar with CMI-41 and of cause no card. On the back of the machine I have a centronics 50-pins SCSI connector which connects to an external SCSI case with a Fujitsu M2261SA harddrive. This Fujitsu drive is also a SCSI device. Laurent, shouldn't I be able to replace the Fujitsu drive with another 50 pin SCSI harddrive like the Micropolis 1624 SCSI drive (668 Mb) or a Quantum fireball SE SCSI drive (1 Gb) and format it with the scsiformat command or am I missing something here? Hello Brian; the Fairlight OS 6.03 did only support a very small number of drives ( I think two or three at most); if memory serves me well it was a 180 MB drive and the largest one a 380 MB drive (or something like that). Good luck finding those; I think the manufacturer went broke long ago. All this changed with the later OS (I don't know if this happened with revision 7 or 8). Of course, this requires new hardware as well... -- Malte Rogacki gacki@gacki.sax.de ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Don't forget to TURN ON THE SYNTHESIZER. I agree with Laurent, you should upgrade the 6.03 machine to 9.34 just so you can have up to 4GB-size SCSI hard drive support. then you can use a whole slew of cheap, commodity 1GB, 2GB, 4GB SCSI hard drives with your CMI. I bought four of the Seagate Barracuda 4GB drives (cheap $$ !) and slapped them into an old SUN external drive case, looks cool and works great with my 9.34 CMI I have a 4GB SCSI internal drive in my CMI for booting and storing sounds too. the CMI-41 card is faster than the 33 too. Hi Brian, yes, the 9.34 upgrade should be considered a "technical" matter. sadly, owning a CMI today is not really for the casual user or non-technical person, as there is no factory support from Fairlight anymore. as such, you have to know quite a bit of the nuts & bolts of the CMI to keep her running & healthy. this often falls outside the realm of what the casual user or musician is comfortable with. the upgrade to 9.34 is not a vanilla one-size-fits-all upgrade. the steps & parts needed to upgrade to 9.34 depend upon what rev CMI you are upgrading, including HW board and SW revisions. at a minimum, the upgrade will cost you about $4K I'd guess with the cost of the CMI-41 card being the most expensive item, then I'd suggest swapping out your 2MB RAM cards with a couple of 8MB RAM cards. then you need to do all the FCN mods to your old boards to get them up to 9.34-era specs. lots more details beyond this, so best talk to Peter and give him your system details. cheers David --- In Fairlight-CMI@yahoogroups.com, Brian Ronn <brian_ronn@y...> wrote: > Hi David & Laurent > > When I was looking at the 9.34 upgrade at Peter Wielks page some time ago it seemed that the upgrade was a big installation and a job for a technician, not for the end-user. > > Is it still possible to get the upgrade and how easy is it to install? I'll consider the upgrade if it's fairly easy to install.
