Electronic Soundmaker background

Electronic Soundmaker background

2003-09-23 by Chris Strellis

Hi group,

I can't give you too much background info on the Vince Clarke mp3. I
would have loved to scan the article in but...read on.

Electronic Soundmaker and Computer Music was a magazine published in
the UK between 1983 and 1985 to compete with Electronics and Music
Maker (E&MM). The magazine feature bands of the time , the gear of
the time and readers musical efforts. I know Kate and her Fairlight
featured in E&MM and she featured into ES&CM too.
http://gaffa.org/reaching/i83_es.html

From October 1985 to September 1985 it also came with a C60
cassette. I had ALL the issues until my Mum in a fit of tidiness
threw them out (along with my E&MMs) when I was at University some
years later.

Fortunately I have retained all the tapes. The tapes contain various
synths, sampler and drum machines demos along with amateur and
professional band demos and songs. I can mention demos of Emulator
II, Ensoniq Mirage, Kurzweil 250, Yamaha TX816, PPG 2.3 with
Waveterm B etc etc all the big synths/samplers of that time. If
anyone is interested in hearing a particular synth again, give me a
shout and I see if its on the tape.

Incidentally, they published a circuit and some software for the ZX
Spectrum to make a sound sampler which I successfully built. You
could only playback monophonically and sample for only a second at
25kHz but you could play it back from you analog synth CV output.
Lots of aliasing (like the Fairlight) because it had NO filters. I
made a lot of demos with this unit for drum loops and I remember
sampling Kate Bush Fairlight samples from The Hounds Of Love - ha -
the circle closes! I still have that (awfully) primitive demo on
tape - hell it was 1985 and I was 15 and I had no money.

Cheers

Chris

P.S. I still have the ZX Spectrum, the sampler box I made and the
software!!!

Hi Colin,

Don't worry, this IS in my game plan.

However, it has to fit in with transferring my Hi-8 home videos to
DVD format and my own demo tapes to mp3 format.

It WILL happen and I'll let you know when I've done it. But
realistically it going to be 6 months away.

Yes, I agree, it is musical history. I have done some recording of
them already i.e Mirage, TX816 but not complete tapes including the
dated sounding adverts! Worryingly one tape with Synclavier
resynthesis sounds sounded very wobbly! I hope I'm not too late.

Cheers

Chris
