Fairlight CMI samples online?

Fairlight CMI samples online?

2006-02-16 by ozidudeau

Would it be possible for members who own Fairlight CMI IIx's and Series
III's to upload samples (in *wav format) from the original libraries
onto an online database, so members like myself and many others, who
are not fortunate to own such marvellous machines, can download them?
I specifically want to use these sounds to make soundfonts.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Antony

Well, the thing is different when a friend makes a few samples from his CMI
so you can use them in your music, but what _you_ ask is different.
Fairlight samples are copyrighted, that means they ought not to be widely
distrubuted among there who don't have CMIs- I can pass you mine,
because their quality isn't comparable to original recorging (no offence
Peter :) ), but note they're still not on my Fairlight site- for a reason.

There are several CDs to be bought, containing CMI IIx library and several
sIII samples.

The samples I sent should sound as good as they'll get as they were recorded "directly" into my PC using a pro sound card, capturing the direct warmth of the Fairlight :-)

I'd go with Rambo here,

Here's my view on it: We paid top dollars for these machines and samples.
Why would I contribute to someone's initiative who wants to make the
original samples available to the entire world and thus lower the value of
my machines ?

Regards,
Harald.

Yes, exactly! I agree also...
The samples I sent (as mentioned below) were a handful to Rambo for his own personal use ;-)

Re: Fairlight CMI samples online?

I completely respect all your points of view with regard to giving
away Fairlight samples. I live in Australia and I am struggling to
find a IIx for sale here. I'm not even sure we have any anymore. I
would definately jump on one if the opportunity arose. Therefore for
now, I have to be content with the samples I collect. I also use them
soley for my own personal use. I have even emailed the great and
fellow countryman Peter Vogel with my plight and he has kindly
offered some suggestions to assist me to get some samples. With
regard to Mr Feldmann's comment that giving away samples would
diminish the value of the actual machines, we all know that a
Fairlight CMI machine with all its grandeur is the ultimate prize,
and anything less is inferior. It is a classic piece that should only
appreciate in value as time progresses.

If anyone is willing to help with my plight, it will be greatly
appreciated.

So it's settled, Peter Vogel does sometimes write here, so if he says it's a
green light, I hope Peter Conelly wouln't also mind me putting unprocessed
samples on my site. That would be fair, because it's still not widely popular.

Meanwhile, I can drop you unprocessed choir and violins that I used to feed
my Akais (check choir and violins.mp3 on my site), but if I find out you
passed it on to someone... that's gonna hurt :-p

Nothing personal but there's no way

however.

Try Horizontal Productions in Sydney for machines. Or
GBG (Graham Brett Graham) in sydney if you dare (they
have a lot of fairlights in various stages of build
but will charge you for the time of day).

plus at least every couple of months on ebay, if you
dare.

Pro-Rec's Series II sample cd is like 29.99 USD or
something.

I think hollow sun already has soundfonts or
something, unless you want to re-invent the wheel.

here're the pages:

http://www.zero-g.co.uk/index.cfm?articleid=916

you can buy it from a distributor in australia for
under $300 aud and run it in your laptop or even a
muse receptor and there you go

I did not realise my post was going to be this controversial but I do
respect your feelings. However I thank you all for your responses
which have given me leads to obtain Fairlight samples as well as
providing the contacts of where I may purchase a CMI in Australia.

Cheers
