Hi David,

Could you get in touch if you are not using both of your music
keyboards. I have a fine working MFX2 system, but the music keyboard I
managed to pick up from another user is hopelessly unrepairable, (mainly
due to the Fatar keys not being produced anymore).

Thanks,

Bob_Coover@digidesign.com

Hi James,
I too am aware of at least 2 different types of Series III
music keyboards. I own two Series III music keyboards, but they are
both essentially identical. It's my understanding from Andrew Brent
that the standard keys on the III were made by Fatar.

cheers
David

Hi,

I am sure that these Fatar keys must have been used in some other manufacturer\u2019s keyboards. I just wish we had a contact at Fatar who could enlighten us. I find it hard to believe that they would have done one design for the CMI keyboard only.

Cheers,

James Thomson

Hi Bob,
I'm hanging on to both my III music keyboards for spare parts.
I tried to contact Fatar too, but to no avail. I never even got
a response from them !

cheers
David

Re: CMI 3 music keyboard different models

2006-03-01 by chaworth012000

Hi David,

I have also tried to contact Fatar (here in the UK), but had no
response to the 5 or so emails I sent. I switched tact and tried the
company responsible for maintanance, but the guys I spoke to had never
heard of a Fairlight! Back to square one ......

I too have 2 keyboards (for 2 machines) and I have one of each type of
the ones commonly available. My earlier keyboard is the more common
73-note board, which frankly is about as basic a mechanism as it is
possible to build, (the DX7 I had in the mid eighties had a more
sophisticated board) and I'm amazed that they did not get more
complaints as to the build quality. On my board, the plastic that
holds the lead in place on several of my keys has not been glued on
straight, which gives it a jagged appearance from the front, and some
othe keys are actually slightly different lengths! This is the board
that is giving me trouble as the rubber grommets need replacing as do
the springs (both the return springs and the bus-bar contact springs).

My second board is the newer, less common 72 note model like the one
on the Fairlight advertised on eBay at the moment. This is a more
spohisticated board and has a better manufacturing quality, but still
uses a bus-bar type contact mechanism and obvoiusly lacks aftertouch.
Again it is suprising that Fairlight chose not to use a more
spohisticated mechanism given the variety available in the late 80's
such as the ones used in the Kurzweil midiboard and the KX-88.

I am not aware of any other types, but I would not be suprised if some
users demanded a more sophisticated board when spending that amount of
cash.

BTW, did you get my notes on the documentation?

Best regards,
Chris.
