I wouldn't say the balance has shifted. There are currently 2 Series III's for sale on US Ebay, both of which are looking at >$7500 prices. Both seem to be in pretty good condition and have flight cases, so a good overall package. Both have been relisted several times due to not hitting the seller's reserve. In my mind, a bit pricey for a machine that has the sound capability of my cell phone.
I think Series II's are coveted for their emotional attachment (who didn't lust after these in the 80s? It's like buying a Ferrari F40 now) and their very unique sound and working environment. IMO, the Series III is definitely a more capable workstation, but it's real value doesn't touch the IIx in a modern environment. It's too much like what you'd actually want to use a decent modern DAW for now. Whereas the IIx is much more like playing with a vintage instrument and experimenting with retro ways of composing, recording, and performing. I dunno if that makes them worth $7000 though. Seems the price is high simply because the 80s sound is back in style in pop music. Considering how much attention a vintage instrument requires just to keep running, it's definitely an investment one way or the other. I've had to practically replace almost everything on my OBXa about 3 times now! =)
Seems the balance is between crazy and insane. ;-)
Cheers,
Scott

Well, we recently saw a IIx go for about $7500 and an early Series III

I guess that the balance has shifted.
So I'm wonderig if there's any chance that anyone might be interested
in trading a Series III for my extra Series I machine?
Alternately, is anyone selling an early Series III?
I'd be interested in hearing about any Series III for sale.
