Al Jourgenssen Fairlight preservation - opinions wanted
2008-05-12 by Harald Feldmann
Dear fellow fairlighters, Basically I have already answered the following question for myself, but I would like to hear your opinions on the topic anyway. As you may know the Al Jourgenssen Fairlight was heavily 'painted' on by its users. This caused many to dismiss the unit as 'defaced'. Well, I have a surprise for you... All the paint, so far, is water soluble. Al apparently was no fool indeed when the sample names were written on the keys. Some sort of erasable pen was used in various colors. It can be removed, with some effort, using nothing but distilled water. Now, the keyboard is filthy. yes I believe filthy is the right word, so I have started to clean some keys, carefully trying not to remove any sample names. However, I believe the charm and character of this particular board lies in its obvious 'usedness'. I have thus decided not to clean the keyboard any further, also because I have other controller keyboards for the Fairlight system unit. Now, the system unit has 'markings' of a different kind. Folklore has it that 'some sort of liquid' (vomit) ended up on the system unit. I can confirm that there are splashed drops of some sort on the unit. Next question arises: what to do with the drops ? wipe them clean or keep the story alive ? Your opinions please ! Regards, Harald
