Dear All,
This is a serious reply - honest.
The nearest I have ever come to successfully recreate the sound of my IIx CMI was when we (for a bit of a laugh) created a set of Mellotron tapes, each with 8 seconds of each note. The resulting 35 tapes were threaded into a frame and the results were amazing.
The Mellotron is a reasonably hi fi machine as the tapes run at 71/2 IPS and theoretical top frequency is about 15 kHz. However I believe is was a success because the unique sound of each note was captured and the Mellotron messes up the sound in a random way when more than one note is played.
We tried the experiment with ARR1, SAXY and SWANNEE. Results were the same for each.
