Serial Mouse For Fairlight MFX2

Serial Mouse For Fairlight MFX2

2008-12-16 by michael.poulain

Hello All,

well after nearly 20 years of lusting and waiting my MFX 2 arrived 2
weeks ago all nicely pack from Peter Weilk in Sydney.

Well am still going through the sound library - which is massive, but
there is only one small problem - Peter was not able to find a mouse in
time that works with the system (I did not even know that there are so
many blood types of serial mice!)

Could someone please point me in the right direction

Thanks for your help and advice in advance

Mike Poulain

Hi Mike,

Look at this site :

I found this info :

Show quoted textHide quoted text
The MFX mouse port (RS232, 1200Baud) is used as a replacement for the graphics-pen of the Alpha-keyboard. (Supported protocols: Microsoft 2-button 3-Byte protocol, MouseSystems 3-button 5-Byte protocol, ...) Here, the MFX generates an output stream compatible with the Alpha-keyboard graphics-pen protocol.

Hope it helps.

Laurent.

Mike,

I have a selection of serial mice that are fine with my MFX
controller. The one I have connected is a genuine Microsoft mouse
which I paid around £3 for on eBay. Be careful of PS/2 mice that say
they are serial port compatible. I have not had much success with
these.

One caveat though; I can only get my mouse to operate correctly if
the MFX controller has the rev 11 firmware loaded. If I load the
9.34 firmware, the mouse simply refuses to work. This of course
means that when using rev9, there is an incompatibility with the MFX
controller for MFX operation, but this has no real impact on CMI
functions. It is interesting that rev11 gives you the option to
choose the mouse type (set this to MS), whereas rev 9 doesn't.

Has anyone had any success with using a mouse / MFX controller with
rev 9.34?

Chris.

Looking at the picture of your machine, you have the same MFX
controller as me, so you should be able to get a mouse to work.

Sorry, can't send mine as I keep the other's as back-up (they are
old electro mechanical devices afterall) but mice like these appear
on eBay all the time. I would look there if I were you. You may even
be able to pick one up from a computer store. Just make sure that it
is a genuine serial port mouse with the DB9 connector on that
matches the port on the rear of the MFX controller.

Hi Chris,

any chance you can list here some of the vendor & model #'s printed on
the bottom of those serial mice that work with the MFX controller
running OS 9.34 on a Series III ?

thanks a lot !

David
