Series III Streaming Tape Drive eating tapes...

Hi, I've decided to start using my Series III again after quite a long break, many years. It seems to be running fine, but as I was trying to get some files off of streaming tape, it apparently will eat the tape every now and then. I was just testing it with some non-essential tapes before trying to read the important one, and it did a dirtape on one tape absolutely fine, but in doing a fromtape on a second one, it stopped halfway through, said that rewinding had started, and just sat there... and the tape was all mangled up inside the cartridge. 1. any suggestions? 2. I'm in the NY/NJ USA area - is there anybody who services old Fairlights? 3. can the streaming tape drive be replaced with a new one? Does anybody still make these? I'll try googling....
