Fairlight disk format?

Fairlight disk format?

2012-01-02 by Gordon JC Pearce

Does anyone have a description of the Fairlight disk format? I've got a bunch of Fairlight disk images here downloaded from the 'net, and I'd like to have a crack at implementing the filesystem in something like FUSE.

Hi Gordon!

Sounds like an amusing project. You must be aware of cmios9.exe? kmi9000 released his source to cmios9 in February last year. All the details of how these various filesystems hang together is in the source.

Failing that, there are some old Motorola MDOS technical manuals online which detail that bit of it, and the os9/os9 68k format is also a standard. I think some enthusiasts are still using in in Europe.

kmi's cmios9 is a utility, and filesystem tool, for OS9, MDR DOS, and QDOS file access. It works on any (well, any that I've yet found) disk image, large and small.
IMO It's very good software. And kmi was very helpful with requests before he made it open source, when I was doing some reverse-engineering of the IIx internal file formats this time last year. The work would've taken much longer without his kind modifications.

Available here:

Do you need more fulsome access to cmi disk/diskette images than kmi's cmios9 provides? If so, what are you up to, can I ask?

Well, initially I want to see if I can extract sounds with their metadata from the disk. I can see the actual wave information in the disk image easily enough, but I'd like to see how it all fits together.

The idea sprung from finding some disk images for the Fairlight while I was looking at ways of editing and converting sounds on Ensoniq Mirage sample disks.

Yes, cmios9 lets you see all of the "metadata" such as loop points, modulation and any notes the programmer left, which is cool. What would be lovely is a system like EMXP which would batch convert disk images to a common format such as SoundFont or Kontakt.

Do you know of anyone who tried Chicken Systems to convert series iii voices? I had spoke with a gentleman named Garth at Chicken Systems some time ago, and while he could not guarantee the conversion, he said that a few users had tried it with good results....

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
